I'd suggest ditching the NAS as a player then .. use a different player (TV,HTPC,Android box, etc.)

QNAP made a big deal about their HDMI + HD Station as a viable media player/HTPC solution, laying claim to being the best NAS for Plex. Turns out, that's been a long running joke they should all be embarrassed by - but undoubtedly they are not. They shipped models (like my 453A) with Plex Home Theater as part of HD Station, which was dead-on-arrival, and then left it in there for far too long to be excusable. Individual contributors delivered Open Home Theater which was 'great while it lasted' before dead-ending into an inactive product. Even Plex Media Player on QNAP came along only as result of individual-driven efforts while QNAP sat on their hands.

QNAP's lack of effort to deliver value from their touted HD Station feature is shameful. If I were a developer at QNAP, focused on HD Station, I sure as h*ll wouldn't admit it to anyone. Nobody would be impressed by your efforts and accomplishments regarding Plex support in HD Station. Had I been able to foresee how lame that 'feature' would turn out to be, I would have gone with a less expensive NAS without HDMI and without the broken-promise functionality that comes with it.

As a NAS, the 453A is 'good'. As a Plex Server? Meh. As a media player? It's a no-show.
