Connecting (or not) to MariaDB

Sorted all of the functions out. This was very easy in the end because it was basically the same issue as the views described earlier and you suss one out with all its MariaDB foibles and all the rest are just repetition.

It now looks as if the migration has worked - just get the latets data update and then we go for some parallel running.
