PNY Quadro P2000 encoding/decoding GPU support

Post by andbir »

I'd like my TVS-1282 to support a PNY Quadro P2000 graphics card for hardware accellerated media encoding (and eventually also decoding) and for that functionality to be leveraged within Plex once the Plex people upgrade the version of ffmpeg they are utilizing. Any one in favour?

not sure what card physically fit or are supported, but you can request cards to be tested at the bottom of this page

I'll try to explain it a little further: The PNY Quadro P2000 video card has media encoding capabilities (i.e. video compression for .MKV file generation) superior to anything else on the market and I would love for this card to A) be supported in my QNAP TVS-1282 NAS and B) be supported for accessing this encoding capability from inside the plex media server running on the NAS. And eventually also supported for on-the-fly decoding and on-the-fly recoding for any connected media streaming clients

well it has to be

a) supported by and fit into your nas (ask qnap)
b) supported by plex (ask plex)

nothing we can do about it here

p.s. I am impressed the absolute best video coding engine is in a 13month old entry level quadro card

Plex is currently working on this. QNAP does enable hardware decoding with P2000 and up. I use a P4000 in my TS-1677X. It does not work with Plex however. This is on the horizon, currently the solution is to create a VM for Plex in Windows and assign the Quadro to that machine. That being said, Dolbyman, what the OP was referring to is that the new gen Quadros (P2000 and above) have been shown to have serious capabilities for transcoding video streams. Up to 20+ 1080P streams for a P2000 and mulitple 4k streams. Due to firmware limitations, more powerful GTX and RTX cards are limited to only 2 streams per card at one time.

Here's a link to the current developments on the plex forum for this ongoing exciting future.

Hi joelt

You are using an PNY P4000 on the QNAP TS-1677X ?

I have tried but the system would not boot , did you have done something special to get it work ? (Drivers injection , Beta images ,...)

Thanks

Drivers are the limiting factors, not firmware. The chips made by the green goblin are all the same, after the chips have been binned, fuses are set that determine the chip ID which determines which drivers can be used with the chip.

Sorry,

I did not see this. Yes I am using a P4000. I will say I am still waiting for PLEX to finish all the coding for the ENCODING part of the HW ability. Right now in QTS, it only appears to use the Quadro for decoding but not encoding. The Encoding puts a LOT of strain on the CPU. I'm using the Ryzen 1700 and it will still spike to 60% usage with a 4k to 1080p transcode. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this gets taken care of soon. The main reason I went with the 1677X was trying to have one box to store and run everything for my home (except backups of course.)

The p2000 is not faster then p400. The price diff is hudge. They share the same dedicated chips for de and encode. You will also save about 20W on power. Its much smaller too. Just a pitty the 400 does not fit in one of the slots in the cpu compartment....by just 5mm or so.

P400 nice for experimenting, it does work with plex full offload de and encode native on ts 673, no internal gpu. Added a stupid script to call plex the harware offload params for nvidea. Its on the plex forum. For now. I am going to 441 and see what new drivers will do. Nvidia drivers.
