[review] QNAP QTS 4.4.1 by Moogle

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin »

https://www.qnap.com/qts/qts441-beta/en-us

You can read whats new here
viewtopic.php?f=151&t=148709#p716286
https://www.qnap.com/en/releasenotes/in ... t_choose=7
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl_ulF5Lm14

my hybridbackup sync 3 beta review is posted separately here
viewtopic.php?f=45&t=148663

both of my qnap models are supported. but like all beta tests, i will focus on one model first. it doesn't make sense to put all your eggs in 1 basket. also the 653a is my backup so..... i rather test on the ts-877 first :)

https://www.qnap.com/en/download?model= ... y=firmware

https://www.qnap.com/en/download?model= ... y=firmware

I'll be updating the thread as i go through whats new with qts 4.4.1 or more specifically 4.4.1.0949 build 20190528 beta which is the version i'm using for the ts-877

First thing to note, the qts 4.4.1 shows in qts (you probably need the beta channel tick/enabled for it to show). so i did not have to download it from the website separately.

*update

This thread is for

- my review of qts 4.4.1 and testing results
- also notes for myself going through the process of reinitializing and setting up the QNAP for later reference. If it helps others also, that's fine too
:)

*note: I tend to back track to previous posts in the thread to update them because they are specific to a certain subject under qts 4.4.1, so i wanted to reduce the same subject being covered in different posts, so i try to contain commentary on the same subject into a previous post where i first mentioned it (most part). So be sure to check previous posts to see if any got updated for the subject matter

ok the qts 4.3.6 to 4.4.1 updated just fine (recommended to reboot qnap before updating if you didn't reboot for a long time).

qfinder also correctly detects the qnap and also the latest 4.4.1 installed.

Greeted by this in qts on login

the top right notifications nothing too alarming there. i need to first update in appcenter and see if that fixes most of it. this level of breakage is expected when transitioning to big changes in qts. usually updating in appcenter fixes it. but if errors still persist even after that, then that should be cause for concern (which hasn't happened yet thkfully). fyi a cross sign for an app in appcenter would indicate that app no longer works (not the malware remover icon :) )

in app center, browse to the other sections like hdstation. because you need to go there to update also.

apparently qpkgs also have digital signatures to help verify that they are official qpkgs and not malware.
Image

there is photostation extension that gets disabled. when trying to re-enable there is a warning that it is not supported. so seems you need to remove that since it's no longer being used.

*update

so now i see some of the apps have digital signatures certified by qnap. but some stuff like third party app don't. so will these maintainers ever be able to get their releases digitally certified? :' just wondering.

multimedia console is new. seems to work. will have to browse around a bit to see it updating tags and stuff first
Image

edited content management.

removed thumbnails. changed thumbnail settings (e.g. i'm not needing 4k thumbnails. and low quality thumbnails seemed fine to me).

also reindex.

top right notification you can see index progress. it polls roughly every 5-10 seconds or so with an increased file count of number of indexed files.

there is now permission rights you can adjust here for the native apps. useful for multi users on the qnap. for me i don't feel the need to adjust anything here.

Qumagie you need to go appcenter > essentials and install there.

There is also another new app, cachemount. This is to make cloud access faster by caching onto your qnap. this is basically something that uses more space and i don't particularly require it. but for those that do, it could be useful for caching content from your cloud storage to make speedier access on the nas.

Image

hm.... why is qsirch showing double results? :S i'll try clear ram and reload browser and see if any of that fixes it later. right now there is a lot of activity indexing, so gonna wait till that finishes first.
Image

*update
i attempted to fix this by changing the multimedia console index from real time to manual. then i delete the index. then i delete thumbnail. then i reindex.... after that is completed, i regenerated thumbnail. i think this solved this problem because i checked qsirch and i don't see the duplicates anymore :'
*update

spoke too soon. i checked again, and notice the problem happened again :S now i just got to wait till thumbnail generation completes to check if it's still there or not.
*update

okay i discovered the issue. There were indeed duplicates. it was cause i copied some images to a new test share, and qsirch automatically indexed (i forgot to exclude the newly created share from being indexed in qsirch).

issue went away after i excluded those items. i wouldn't say it was a problem, as qsirch worked as intended. it was simply negligence on my part :ashamed:

So yes, qsirch works fine. I'll have to test if they fixed the issue of locking encrypted shares also removes exclusion for it upon unlocking. i'll post that later.

:( though to be fair i do need to upgrade ram. 8-16gb should be about right.

*update

i just ordered new ram to fix this issue. it will probably arrive within a week.
16GB Kingston 2x8GB HyperX FURY DDR4 2666MHz RAM 21300 DIMM Desktop Memory
If you are looking for inexpensive 16GB DDR4 memory kit which is easy to install, performs well and looks good then HyperX FURY is memory for you. For sure there are faster memory kits but not many offer so good performance to price ratio.

hdstation works

Image

but it's not using kodi leia? You have to install that from qnap club i believe (req is qts 4.4.x )
https://qnapclub.eu/en/qpkg/677

yep kodi leia works. best if you can plug in hdmi to HDTV then run hdstation > kodi leia then watch your movies and stuff from there 8)
Image

alternatively, you can stream over smb to hdtv or it's connected android box running either kodi or plex.

for transcoding like emby, the dev said as long as you update to the qts 4.4.x and the new nvidia driver, that the hardware transcoding for graphics card should then work. but i don't have a premier account so i couldn't test that out. but if anyone else can and wants to confirm if that works, that would be great :) the other option is plex beta, but that too requires a plex pass :(
https://emby.media/

*update

Nvidia graphics card is now detected by Emby
Well that looks very good ! The fact that they're being detected shows that it should work, given Emby Premiere. This is the first time we've ever seen Nvidia GPU's detected on QNAP.
Image

https://emby.media/community/index.php? ... eleration/

and new changes for transcoding in qts 4.4.1 shows this under multimedia console.
Image

there is a lengthy discussion about the new nvidia drivers for 4.4.1 over in this thread

Qumagie review Part1

Qumagie, been checking it out how it works.

I'm still indexing/creating thumbnails then i got to re-run the AI to tag pictures... so it will be a while before actual.

So for now i'm just browsing through the features to see what it is i can do with it if only a glimpse of how it works.

this is what you can call the main page of qumagie. you browse your total image collection here. the default is timeline mode (which i'm fine with). Or you can toggle the view to show based on a different criteria like creation date etc, however you like.
Image

or you can browse by directory level mode as well
Image

and these are the BASIC search options to find a specific image. But if that's not enough, there is also qsirch you could try :'
Image

This section is where all the tags generated by AI go to. by default they are unamed, so you would need to name them. You also SHOULD browse within them to check whether there is a false grouping (it can most definitely happen). In those instances you would then remove them from there (don't worry it won't delete the actual picture. just remove the grouping). And hopefully future ai scans won't make the same mistake.
Image

it's very easy to add pictures to existing tags. just type a partial, then click from the list and you're done.
Image

then there is the smart album area. you have the defaults like people, objects. and there is the custom smart albums, where you can compile a bunch of tagged items to show up under the same album. These ought to be virtual albums, so they are not physically stored there, just merely displayed same album within this qumagie app for your convenience. so e.g. for isekai quartet album, i'd put together the overlord, rezero, youjo senki characters together under the same smart album.

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxJhTAxXzLI

Image

there is also an upload image feature, similar to imgur picture hosting drag and drop approach. Normally i would just browse using windows explorer and upload that way. Or you can use this UI and browse where you want the images put, then drag drop with the configured rules e.g. overwrite/skip etc... (i have an app on windows that does this though called teracopy)
Image

oo someone asked why is it all just thumbnails.
KathrynEJ wrote: Wed May 29, 2019 1:04 pm Perhaps I am missing something but from what I can see so far QuMagie looks just like another way to view your photos in a collage type display, rather than a program to sort or organise them, which a lot of us were really hoping for. No way to sort by tag that I can find. Also, no way to view as anything but a thumbnail, so you can't do a bulk re-sort of image files etc.
Happy to be corrected if anyone else can see more to it? I am a bit disappointed if this is all it is.

well your suppose to browse the images in whatever mode, then click or double click to open to view the image in full
*update

Okay i see what the user meant. when i double click view, it is still in a thumbnail form although more bigger in size. it's not the original image quality. tbh i would expect it to show the full image, maybe another click for a zoom into the full image mode, but it doesn't do that  why?

specifcally, this is how it looks using qumagie. this is not the original image, it's merely a good big thumbnail.
Image

this is the same picture but viewed in photostation. notice how you can scale it from the big thumbnail to the full image? and there's also an option to download the original image as well. None of those 2 things are available in the qumagie image finder, which is very surprising  will have to put in a feature request to put this basic thing in qumagie.
Image

thumbnails are fine for quick browsing, but ultimately when inspecting images in closer detail, you would expect to be able to view and download the original image in it's full quality version (preferably with the expand to full view toggle included) :?

I'll also add, there does not seem to be a way to open the image to it's original location in file explorer or filestation. Also that location pathing you cannot even select it with mouse to copy paste elsewhere either.
*update

Okay just to be more specific. There IS a download for images. but NOT when viewing the actual images in the detailed view. The download is only available via marking images in the checkboxes then clicking on the option to the top right for download. Although there is no download in single picture view mode, at least there is that.

But that still does not explain why detail single picture view mode does not allow for original picture zoom/view mode. That at least still needs a fix i believe :(

anyway that is basically what qumagie is and does. i'll now have to wait for complete indexing etc before i can tinker around and see how well it handles :)

*update

One thing i noticed in qumagie for the tagged characters, it's different from the previous facial tagging. previously when you viewed an image in the tagged section, you would have a box on the face to point out who the picture is tagging it for. but it's missing. so i got a picture that is clearly grouped incorrectly, but there are 3 characters in the image, and i have no idea which character this image is being tagged for because of the missing box to point it out :S i'll need to create a ticket for this issue. now i'm afraid they may have dumbed it out down too much and remove some useful features from before.

it's interesting how it tagged objects. some were hit and miss, and some were surprisingly accurate. as long as it has a more than 70% + accuracy for all the pics stored, then that saves me time manually having to tag it all by myself. I still have to check it's not incorrectly tagging though.
Image

Summary

I like the new Qumagie. But.... i don't think it is fully working as it doesn't seem to tag as many facial recognition under "people" compared to the previous facial tagging app in 4.3.6

Yes there are objects where "cartoons" are listed. But i ALSO wanted the characters to be recognized as people as well (it already does but the detection rate for this grouping is far lower than previous results).

Also... i have anime... not cartoons :( so i hope they can create cartoons and anime separately, or at least a toggle to change the name to anime.

and according to the youtube explanation, it was leaked that photostation will be phased out by this year end with a replacement. And that Qumagie and photostation are separate apps. Qumagie is more specific to doing AI assisted tagging for images and grouping them accordingly.

*updated
there is a new video comparing qumagie against synology's moments. one thing of note was how indexed pics for it MUST be in the drive folder.... :S whereas the qumagie u can select the image locations via multimedia console wherever location they are stored in(it doesn't force you into putting all your pics under a specific root folder/share). The qnap approach is way more user friendly and flexible in that regard.

However qumagie loses in regards to single picture view mode, because the moments has more options like "download". Other than that, i'm not sure if moments can do a view of the original pic or whether it's a enlarged thumbnail view same like Qumagie.

Qumagie seemed to have a better accuracy rate for tagging than moments. also the tagging in qumagie can be much more refined, like instead of just flower, it can be much more specific than that e.g. hydrangea.

Qumagie has folder browsing directory mode, which moments lacks.

One part i didn't agree with Rob was how he didn't think multimedia console was useful. I see it differently. All the multimedia management is in a single unified app window.... so you don't have to chase all over qts to configure this related stuff. it's all there in this one setting management page. and they all have sub pages for the different multimedia stuff to configure. I tried it out myself and it's easy to use and figure out. So i don't know why rob is complaining about it. I'd be less impress if it had less management options than now for handling the multimedia on the QNAP. heck there is even a very useful 1 click button toggle to disable multimedia services. the synology multimedia management page does indeed look much more lean and simplified, but i don't necessarily think it's better, because early on i already pointed out how they force you to use their specific drive folder for images, whereas qnap lets you browse to the location your stored images. maybe they have this problem because they over simplified it to not have enough configurable options (which the QNAP provides).

So i see the changes brought by multimedia console as an improvement (unified settings for multimedia + lots of configurable and easy to understand options to tweak your settings). The only thing i doubt is whether this app is stable just yet (specifically in regards to indexing, and also qumagie detection/tagging). I'm still testing this out.

Qumagie review part 2
*revised some comments after having explored further and a 2nd look at what i tested before. so the 2nd part should have a more updated review for any part it covers.

there have been some storage space consumption reports here
viewtopic.php?f=151&t=148709&p=716506#p716503

viewtopic.php?f=151&t=148709&start=15#p716414

but when i checked mine, there didn't seem to be anything unusual.

right now only indexing/thumbnail generation and possibly snapshots would be creating some increased storage consumption for me right now. so i haven't seen anything build up to alarming storage use unexpectedly just yet on my end.

in multimedia console indexing i disabled 4k thumbnails. and i lowered the quality of thumbnails to help reduce system storage space usage.

Reboot test

Image

takes about like 3minutes ish for the things to gracefully shut down.

so reboot worked fine on boot up except a few things. last i checked during shutdown i did not see this. so i'm guessing this occured after booting up.
Image

i also got this
Image

so i check appcenter, qumagie seems to be enabled, so i don't reckon i have to reinstall it? and the internet works (probly got confused during boot up). Before rebooting i did disable ssd cache acceleration first after pausing thumbnail generation. because i wanted to check if doing so and rebooting would help speed it up or not.

*update

even after reinitializing a fresh clean QTS 4.4.1 i still get the "multimedia console failed to launch qumagie core. reinstall it in app center" on reboot :S

1st error I think is related to qpkg.conf boot sequencing issue for qumagie vs qumagie core.

2nd issue re:gateway, no idea. I believe I have mine hard coded to my port-trunk, so might be a bug related to auto setting.
