Finished running the long smart test

Image

no issues as far as i can tell.... but smart test is not always accurate :S

running a scan disk next to check for badblocks. completed, no warning messages popped up, so i assume no badblocks found.

As precaution i ordered a WD red 4tb NAS hdd as a replacement just in case
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1RsVhyRgno

*update

while restarting, the shutdown process was not moving, so i select to force shutdown.

now on reboot it is doing a raid rebuild
Image

Image

looking at the logs, this time it didn't really single out any one drive as to why it is now rebuilding :S

also why is storage manager saying status ready, no indicator of any degraded mode, and yet top right task status says there is a raid rebuild taking place. is this a bug?

16GB Kingston 2x8GB HyperX FURY DDR4 2666MHz RAM 21300 DIMM Desktop Memory

Capacity: 8GB
Speed: DDR4 2666MHz (PC4)
Time: CL16
Voltage:1.2V
Buffering/Ecc:
Non-ECC,Unbuffered

okay just ordered. got to wait till both items arrive then i'll install them :)

just noticed this if anyone else is interested :' *no idea regarding compatibility for qnap for it
The memory returns, in the form of the G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB dual-channel kit with 3000 MT/s DIMMs.

Image

These sticks are simple, with generously sized heatsinks and no RGB LED lighting. The timings read 16-18-18-38, and the price tag reads just $134.99 at Newegg. Essentially, you're getting 32 GB for what 16 GB cost not all that long ago.

*update

while waiting for ram to arrive, just read/refreshed on the manual.

to install the ram especially for dual channel, you're suppose to install it in 2 specific slots. the instructions and picture diagram for which slots are in the manual guide you can download from here

tested the cachemount app. it's supposed to be a replacement for the cloud connect app used for mounting cloud storage.

Image

https://www.qnap.com/solution/cachemount/en/

yes it works great, and the interface usability is all good. in filestation the remote mount now links to cachemount app as well.

so i added google drive and dropbox, those both worked. but since i use chrome plugins, i had to visit those sites first to login, then tab back to qts before i click the add cloud services, so they did not get blocked.

after mounting them, filestation can browse those cloud services.

and when not in use, i can simply disable them (without deleting the added accounts).

there is also an option to remotely add devices. i'm not exactly sure how this works. well mounting a ftp server that i know. but i'm not sure how to add local lan devices using smb :' i tested it on desktop but i didn't get that to work.

but mounting the qnap share to the pc desktop using qfinder, that definitely works.

initially i was worried about cachemount wanting to cache onto the qnap and use up more space, but apparently this is only IF you choose to enable the cache feature
Businesses can use CacheMount on NAS in different offices and map those NAS to the same cloud storage for file synchronization to ensure they always have latest file versions. When local caching is enabled on the NAS, colleagues in different locales can enjoy low-latency access to the same cloud files via LAN connection. Not only can it help reduce business bandwidth expenses but also helps to achieve higher work efficiency and productivity.
it's a good feature for those who need it, but since i don't i opted to just use the mounting but without locally caching. besides, local caching feature isn't out yet, it says "coming soon".

well i don't think there is anything that serious yet on the qts 4.4.1 so i'll move to the next step and update the ts-653a to the qts 4.4.1

Hm... on the ts-877 security counselor says no internet. but the internet works.... so bug?
Image

Well if it meant not reachable because not port forwarded, then yeah it's correct. but i can download from the NAS to the internet via firmware updates, and access appcenter just fine.

same thing on the ts-653a.

by the way i reflashed 4.4.1 onto the ts-877 to see if that would help iron out some bugs. my UI felt a bit sluggish :'

the ts-877 rebooted on it's own, then on startup it's rebuilding raid again. gonna take 11+ hours ... again....

and no hint about what is causing this :{ in logs.

i only can try replace hdd4 and hope that was the reason causing this. cauz there is no other hint.

i'll have to run a full test for all hdds this time around :S

*update

i notice in storage manager that the file system also got bugged out. should i run file system scan before or after raid sync? or same time? :'

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin »

QENC is also new in qts 4.4.1

you can find it in filestation "encrypt".

i tested it and it works.

it does a few things right
- you can hide/unhide password
- it asks you for password twice (to prevent you entering an incorrect password due to typo) and will verify if they are matching or not.
- then it offers an option to keep the original (unencrypted version) or delete after encrypting.

useful for sharing files i'm sure, but for backup, i wish that client side encryption worked since that would be ideal.

and i'm already using encrypted shares which is very practical in terms of use. When i need access i unlock the encrypted share. when i'm done or when i shutdown, it will lock.

Image

*update

I' just want to point out that QTS where it requires a password entry, not all have a hide/unhide. QTS should improve by making the UI elements such as these standardized. Not have one without hide/hide but the other does. It's a bit inconsistent in this regard, not just for this but also other things. One i can think of is the text wording for whether to show the intro slides on the next opening of an app.

Re: [review] QNAP QTS 4.4.1 by Moogle

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin »

other new stuff they added in qts 4.4.1 which i've taken note of.

i didn't try out the SSD hardware self encrypting drive (SED) feature that was added in qts 4.4.1

There is also newly added
- Storage & Snapshots now tracks and displays the estimated remaining life of SSDs.
SSD Information
If the disk is an SSD, this page lists supported ATA commands and other SSD-specific features. If the SSD has a device statistics log, the system displays the estimated life remaining and issues warning notifications when life remaining reaches the manufacturer-defined threshold.

Note: SSD estimated life remaining does not affect the disk's health status or trigger S.M.A.R.T. migrations.
which i can't test either because my ssds don't have this feature. maybe the newer ones do.

File Sharing Protocol
- Added support for Samba 4.7.
usually to patch the vulnerabilities and perhaps add some improvements
https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerabilit ... Samba.html
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_ ... y_release)

QTS - Security
- Added version settings for TLS.(in qts it only has up to tls 1.2)
- Added support for HTTP compression.

Web Server
- Added version settings for TLS.
- Added support for HTTP compression.
WHAT IS TLS ANYWAY?
TLS is an acronym for “Transport Layer Security,” which is the protocol that allows digital devices (such as computers and phones) to communicate over the internet securely without the transmission being vulnerable to an outside audience. TLS makes it possible for you to use your credit card to snag that blender deal on Amazon Prime Day, or to make secure transfers via your bank account online.

WHY DO WE NEED TLS 1.2?
The latest PCI compliance standards require that any site accepting credit card payments uses TLS 1.2 after June 30, 2018. Even though you have some time before TLS 1.2 is required for PCI compliance, most internet services are moving to require support of TLS 1.2 earlier. Services such as PayPal, Authorize.net, Stripe, UPS, FedEx, and many others already support TLS1.2, and have announced that they will eventually refuse TLS 1.0 connections. This means your safest action is to upgrade to TLS 1.2 sooner than later to avoid disruption.

An Easy To Understand Guide – SSL, TLS, SSL Certificate And HTTPS *Recommended read
https://www.clickssl.net/blog/an-easy-t ... -and-https

FBI Issues Warning on ‘Secure’ Websites Used For Phishing
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a public service announcement regarding TLS-secured websites being actively used by malicious actors in phishing campaigns.

Internet users are accustomed by now to always look at the padlock next to the web browser's address bar to check if the current page is served by a website secured using a TLS certificate.

Users also look for after landing on a website is the "https" protocol designation in front of the hostname which is another hint of a domain being "secure" and the web traffic is encrypted.

TLS-secured phishing landing pages
However, this exposes them to phishing campaigns designed by threat actors to use TLS-secure landing pages which exploit the users' trust to deceive them into trusting attacker-controlled sites and handing over sensitive personal information.

"They are more frequently incorporating website certificates—third-party verification that a site is secure—when they send potential victims emails that imitate trustworthy companies or email contacts, " as the FBI says in the PSA.

"These phishing schemes are used to acquire sensitive logins or other information by luring them to a malicious website that looks secure."

The FBI recommends following these steps to avoid being tricked by bad actors via HTTPS-secured phishing landing pages:
• Do not simply trust the name on an email: question the intent of the email content.
• If you receive a suspicious email with a link from a known contact, confirm the email is legitimate by calling or emailing the contact; do not reply directly to a suspicious email.
• Check for misspellings or wrong domains within a link (e.g., if an address that should end in “.gov” ends in “.com” instead).
• Do not trust a website just because it has a lock icon or “https” in the browser address bar.

there are a bunch of other changes but i didn't mention here. you can read about them in the qts 4.4.1 release notes if you are curious

and no hint about what is causing this :{ in logs.

i only can try replace hdd4 and hope that was the reason causing this. cauz there is no other hint.

i'll have to run a full test for all hdds this time around :S

*update

i notice in storage manager that the file system also got bugged out. should i run file system scan before or after raid sync? or same time? :'

It will be the RAM, I was plagued with the same issue for nearly a year. I raised numerous calls with QNAP, even had QNAP dev team and production manager on the case and they could not see any immediate issues.

RAM passed all memory tests but I was greeted with random reboots daily but then sometimes it would stay up for a few days.

I finally had enough and thought I'd try some RAM that is actually listed as compatible by the manufacturer. I picked up some Crucial ram and my system has been stable ever since.

No random reboots at all.

ty so much gtunney. it's very much appreciated Image now i at least have a lead to look into next.

this issue has been driving me crazy Image right now i do not trust storing data on it till this is figured out( i also plan to reinitialize, because there were too many raid rebuilds that i'm not sure that it didn't cause some data issues with it. good thing i have a very recent backup). cauz if i know a raid rebuild is likely to trigger again without finding the root cauz first to fix, thats simply unacceptable Image

temporarily i've switched over to the ts-653a backup to keep me going for now while this gets sorted out Image

so far i ran long smart test on the 4 hdds. all show they are fine in smart Image i only finished bad block scan for hdd4, i'm doing the other 3 atm.

i also have a new wd red 4tb (currently running smart long test) which i thought i need to replace hdd4 because there was an alert that hdd4 dropped out of raid (i believe a similar incident happened a few months back one time, thats why i'm suspicious of it despite the okay smart test results).

i didn't pull out hdds and use the hgst diagnostic tool, didn't think i'd need to go that far. i can't seem to use hdd docker for these diagnostic tools. i'd have to install it into my desktop :S

anyway helpdesk is in remote session and taking a look at it. hopefully they can find out for sure. i only know the basics for troubleshoot Image

I haven't gotten around yet to testing the ram. I'll do that once all the current tests complete and helpdesk is done with their remote session

I got some new ram on the way Image

By the way, i did notice that since i went to qts 4.4.1 that i lately had ram maxed out which resulted in mem swap (which is not ideal cause it's slow. and the main reason why we use ram to begin with). thats why ordered the new ram. But after what you said, i'm wondering whether that could perhaps also be a sign that something is up with the ram itself :' ? anyway it was only when i was doing thumbnails, indexing etc, that it began to eat up ram like the cookie monster. on idle ram usage seems fine.

was that the original qnap ram you had the issue with? mine is the original fyi.

Sorry to ask again but, when your raid rebuild did it say any hdd specifically got disconnected? or did it just simply say raid rebuilding?

cauz if you only got the later issue, then i may have 2 issues

1. hdd4 really is dying (because the 1 event it explicitly said it got disconnected and led to a degraded state). so i'd have to replace the hdd.
2. the same issue like you in relation to the ram, causing a raid rebuild (but in storage manager it doesn't say degraded or anything, and no hdds were singled out as the cause, and no degraded status, it simply says its ok and that it's just rebuilding). so i'd have to replace the ram.

No I didn't get any disconnected drives just really bad system stability.

On shutdown sometimes it would hang, on powering up sometimes it would hang on booting. Random reboots during the night.

The rebuild will be due to unexpected shutdown. Mine was so bad I was doing a rebuild every 3 days. NAS would randomly reboot, I'd rebuild over 2 days, 3rd day nas would random reboot again and the whole process started again.

The RAM itself was fine and passed all Memtests so it must have been a compatibility issue with the ram I put in.

The problem also followed me from my TS-453B to my TS-653B and the RAM / HDD was the only thing that was transferred.

It may not be the RAM but i'm just speaking from my issues and the torment I had for over a year trying to diagnose this issue with QNAP.
