Qnap TVS-882Br i7 - Plex configuration

Post by Mahdois »

I use a TVS-882br as a plex server for a year.
And here I will upgrade to 10 Tb disks so it will be: 8x 10 Tb seagate nas disks + 2x 512G WD m2 sata disks
My question: for a plex use is it better to configure the Sata disks for cash or create a separate partition with these 2 SSD disks and install the applications on it?
One last solution would be to install 2 other SSDs with an ssd extension card and so I can use 2 SSD for cash and 2 others to install the applications on it.
But is it useful?
Thanks for your advices.

Dont think cache would help at all (those disks should be plenty fast for sequential reads ..)

application install on ssd might speed up db creation and reads up a bit

I have plex running on just hdd ..loads very quick

Hello,
I have my Plex application on SSD and tall of my media on disk and seems to work fine. At one point I did try caching on the disk pool and found performance actually went down. When I thought about it, it made sense as streaming media is not an application that lends it itself to caching.

Ok.. .for Plex.

Cache won't help you really for your HDD's as the data rate required for streaming is pretty minimal compared to your HDD throughput.

Cache/SSD volume will help you for Plex Media Library functions (DB, Metadata, etc. & Real-Time transcoding).

So I have my Plex install setup on a SSD volume, but all my media files are on HDD.

Thank you very much
Someone can help me to configure my disks (Pools, volume, Raid...)?
I must initialise my qnap TVS-882BR and configure these disks for exlusive plex use.
I have :
- 2x 512 WD m2 SSD (I went to install applications on these disks)
- And 8 x 10TO Seagate Ironwolf (For Media )

At the moment I have no data in this nas
There are many options to configure (Volume, pool , raid...) So I really need your advice.

I hink I have a real problem
I made 2 static partitions as you advised me:
- 1 partition with 2 ssd disks for application
- another with 8 disks Segate ironwolf

I installed plex on the first partition and i copied my Movies and series on the 2nd partition.

Everything works very well for 2 days.
And today plex can play movies and series but I can't see the shared directory where movies and series are stored.
But I still see that the partitions shows a used space of 31 TB which corresponds exactly to the volume of my movies and series.

Thank you for you precious help

Also from WHERE are you trying to look? As admin via QTS console or from say media playback device, pc as guest/non-admin user?
