TR-002 Constant Drive Access Even When Idle?

Post by fatpizza »

I recently bought a QNAP TR-002 external USB enclosure, and I installed two seagate ironwolf 12tb drives in it yesterday. I have it connected to my QNAP 1277 via USB-C in software mode (setup as Raid 1 within the 1277 interface).
It seems to work fine, but even when I'm not using it the disks sound like their heads are seeking pretty much every second or two, and the noise is unbearably annoying (the HDD lights flash on the unit as well). I have drives set to standby after 30 minutes but that makes zero difference. I have 8x 10TB WD Reds inside the 1277 and that is ultra quiet.
I've tried stopping a bunch of apps including the virtualization station with no change.

Any ideas? As it's unusable as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe it's the Ironwolf Health Management (IHM) that's working on the disks?

In addition to the above I would expect 7200 rpm disks in a small 2-bay chassis to be much noisier than 5400 rpm in a large metal case NAS.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

Hi fatpizza,
We are working on the TR-004/002/004U idle mode when connecting to QTS 4.4.1.
Please wait for the new official release or try the beta 4 https://www.qnap.com/en/download?model= ... y=firmware.

Hmm, it seems I have the exact same problem. An 16 TB ironwolf pro. Now and then it shuts up only to start a minute later again while no data is retrieved from this drive. Anybody an update on this issue? Because we are an half year later now. The QNAP it is attached to is a TS253 pro with firmware 4.4.2.1320.

Ronald
