Raid expansion fail after HDD swap to 4x4TB in RAID5

Post by PepperB »

TS-439 Pro II+, firmware 4.2.6, RAID5.

I have swapped HDDs from 4x1TB to 4x4TB (WD Red WD40EFRX 4 TB). Diskswap was successful after Rebuilding complete at all 4 disks. All data still accessible.
Then I have tried numerous times to expand RAID capacity according to intructions but it repeats failing after 11 minutes: RAID SIZE EXPANSION FAILED. Steps I took: Storage manager ->RAID management -> select disk volume -> action -> expand capacity -> ok
QNAP helpdesk triggered the expansion twice via remote login and failed as well.

I just found out that WD Red WD40EFRX 4 TB is not mentioned as supported HDD in firmware 4.2.6
I checked over 20 tickets in this forum and followed all instructions without success.

please help, what do I need to do for a succesful RAID expansion?

Thanks

You did not mention if you followed the "replace one-by-one" instructions in the manual.

Hi MrVideo,

I am afraid with the first HDD I just took it from the with QNAP in active mode, replaced the HDD en have it rebuild.
Subsequent HDD have been replaced according to replace one-by-one: in storage manager/RAID management -> action capacity expansion I replaced HDD one by one including rebuild.

Can you please advise me how to correct? I still have the working original HDDs and a back-up.

Thanks

You would have had to select the first HDD that you replaced outside of the procedure so that you can pull it, wipe the partition table and put it back in. You must do ALL of the drives with the replace procedure.

Feedback from the QNAP helpdesk today was:
RAID 5 creation time is : Jun 18 03:31:50 2011. At that moment the firmware could not execute an expansion. Advise is to start all over again make a back-up and with new firmware I will get a new creation time. With the new creation time and latest firmware the NAS will be able to execute expansion.
After that copy back the back-up.

How can I best start over again. What are the exact steps to take I do not want to make wrong steps again. Or is there another solution?

thanks

In the manual there is a section about starting over, and the various options for various levels of doing so.
