tvs-473 Stuck on booting

Post by Neilo »

Hello,

So after a recent firmware update to 4.3.6.1050 the nas won't boot now. I've plugged in monitor and key board and i see it loads the Kernel then goes to the screen starting an basically hangs. I've tried the qnap recovery from the wiki page, i was successful is writing the dom.image. Once i restart the nas its basically the same thing. the qfinder doesn't find the nas either.

I've basically tried everything posted with no success. :(

Any thoughts?

update1: I did notice if i leave the nas unplugged for some time it boots into a test mode where the qfinder does see it, i updated the firmware, reinstalled my drives to initialize but by the time i did this i lost connection to the nas. I have complete back ups so i'm not worried about the data. i'd like to start fresh. but the darn nas just wont let me do it! So frustrating! and to boot, the nas is 3 months off warranty! Brutal. Its just amazing how this goes completely sideways after a firmware update.

not sure about your warranty, since QNAP only announced the x73 model in April of last year (2018) and it comes with a 2 Year warranty in my country.

have a look here: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=135089&p=710740

I used this method previously and it worked for me.

I purchased the unit in June 2017, came with 3 year warranty. I'm now over the 60 day grace period for extended warranty as well. :( Thanks for the link, i'll review it. But just quickly looking I've tried. that. Can anyone post a pic of the Bios and the CPU voltage values? I'm have a suspicion this could be a power supply issue. Unit boots up when cold but after a few minutes it freezes..

Thanks

I would check also to make sure your fans are working properly (system and CPU). Could be a thermal or CPU issue where you are freezing up as well. If it boots, it probably isn't a bios issue... you wouldn't get that far.

Try running it for a while without HDD's in it. If it is a PSU issue, HDD's will likely make it worse.

Also make sure you have only 1 NW cable connected as any teaming configuration will have been wiped-out on the rebuild.

I've been trying to get it to go in recover mode without the drives installed, as per recovery mode instructions. I did make it pretty far one time and managed to get it updated with latest firmware. but then it crapped out after i initialized the drives. I've tested the power supply and it checks ok form what i can tell. Looks like the unit is done! Only lasted three years sad if you ask me  . I have a ticket open with them and I'm told the RMA doesn't have motherboard on hand. of course this would be out of warranty repair. looks like this is going to be a very expensive paper weight if you ask me. :x I'm a little bitter, yes! Could be worse if i was foolish enough to not back up my stuff.

Time to consider another NAS, cant be sure i would stay with QNAP though.

I can understand the frustration. Since it is update to the latest firmware that is a good sign. What kind of HDD's are you using with it and are they on Qnap's compatibility list?

there has been a spate of these type of failures of late. even my TS-453BT3 died not so long ago. I really dont know if its component failure or software vandalism

Yup, its a total dead unit now, can't even get the Recovery image to take anymore. I've confirmed its not the power supply, appears to be motherboard or CPU hangs. Either way, I'm waiting from RMA to tell me how much for a new motherboard? They said the RMA department didn't have one and that they have ordered it. Weird, what if i say forget it? One would think they would have pricing for this stuff for people who are out of warranty and need service? oh i forgot, QNAP warranty and sales in US/Canada are just mom and pop shops Right! what a joke! LOL.

Paul, My drives are on the compatibility list been using them for over 3 years! that's not the issue here.

Good to know on the drives, bummer on the dead system.

Sometimes can see similar type issues if using WD Green or Seagate DM drives.

Hi Paul,

How do you like the ts-877? How would you say it stack up against your tvs-673?

I managed to pull the Bios flash from the MB using AMI bios tools. Easily found https://ami.com/en/products/firmware-to ... -utilities. Made a usb stick formatted with FAT32 plug into the NAS, On boot up (DEL) to bios screen and run the efi shell utility. it loads the shell commands on the USB. I then ran the AFUEFIx64.efi that i also had on the usb, was able to check the bios for errors and pull it off. i re-flashed the MB, Unfortunately this didn't help me. Sad to say i have a bad MB or bad On board CPU..

I have the same problem. Following the wiki instructions, at one point I was about to get past the first page of clonezilla. Now I cannot.

Try unplugging any external usb drives. Ran into issue on x77 with that on 4.5.2

The only USB is the thumb drive to restore firmware. Every time I try, I get a different screen.
