Slow write speed
Hey Gang,
I'm new here. Just added a QNAP 453BT3 to my MacBook Pro with 8 cores.
I'm getting 600 MB/s Read but only 150 MB/s write. I'm connected via Thunderbolt. Why is the write so slow?
Any ideas? I'm new to "server world" so please be kind.
Rob

Re: Slow write speed
150MB/s sounds ok for 2 drives in RAID 1 ...what disks do you have in it to expect more ?

Re: Slow write speed
OK, so maybe a dumb question, but would more disks (I only have 2 in now) make the write faster?

Re: Slow write speed
Again... to dolbyman's point... what KIND of disks do you have.
And adding more drives MIGHT improve write performance depending on if they are small vs. large files, protocol, proper OS X tuning, etc.

Re: Slow write speed
do a diskbench in the gui (can't check what app right now..traveling in asia) ..and see what the write speeds of the disks are
150MB/s sounds fine for sustained sequential write (random will be much lower)

maybe if you use ssd cache for the hdd raid you can better speeds perhaps over thunderbolt3 ?Capacity: 10 TB
Speed gain: Up to 2x read speed, no write speed gain
Fault tolerance: 1-drive failure

Re: Slow write speed
lets do some diagnostics in SSH on the nas.
SSH to your NAS.
then type in the following commands, cut and paste the results into a post (use the BBcode quotes/code) to make them readable in a post.

Re: Slow write speed
since you have only added the NAS, was the raid array finished or was it still syncing/scrubbing when you ran the test perhaps?

Re: Slow write speed
sigh -
this is the QNAP site for the TS-453BT3
https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/ts-453bt3
They show 690 MB/sec/520 MB/sec, when using a 10G connection to a Win 10 PC, and the TS-453BT3 has
four RAID 0; 4 x Intel SSDSC2BB240G4 SSD -
see the word SSD ? see the word RAID 0 ?
You have 2 SATA drives, in a RAID 1 configuration. I have built several TS-453BT3's using four Seagate Ironwolf 7200 RPM drives in a RAID 5 configuration. You don't get more than 450 MB/sec (and I actually know what I am doing). You are watching too many YouTube videos. You only have 2 drives in there, and you are setup for RAID 1 mirroring, which means that when you write something to the one drive, it has to copy it to
the second drive. You should be happy with 150 MB/sec.
Put in 4 matching 7200 RPM drives, RAID 5, and you will get 450 MB/sec.
"But what about the specs on the QNAP website" - stop hoping that you will get the theoretical specs. You are not running SSD's, and you are not using RAID 0.
You have not said what your application is. Because you have a MacBook Pro, and the TS-453BT3, I am guessing that you might be doing video editing (Adobe, Resolve, FCP X). Even if you follow everything that I am
telling you (if this is in fact your application) - this will be fine for YOU. The TS-453BT3 is not suitable for multiple users doing 4K editing. I don't care what the QNAP promotional material says.
