Considering setting up MyQNAP Cloud but concerned about security

Post by user1028 »

Hi there,

I realized I was missing notifications after I noticed my TS-1685 was in a degraded state (power button was flashing red). I logged in to see why I didn't get a notification and see that "Authorization has expired" for my email, so I never received the notification.

I keep my QNAP updated and have gone through the Security Counselor. I would like push notifications, but I'm still uncomfortable setting up MyQNAP Cloud since I only assume it makes one more door to the world. I have a nightly back up but it's on the same network. Am I paranoid or should I leave it as is with MyQNAP disabled?

Is SMS a better way to go (I know I'd have to find a paid service going that route)?

Thank you for any input!

exposing the qnap to the outside got lots of people hacked...so if you want to reach your nas from wan...use a vpn (preferably via router or dedicated appliance)

sauce

you decide based on the facts. If what you want is remote access, then VPN is the PROPER method. It's at least safer by far.

that said, i've used myqnapcloud before and it works and have never been hacked. but over the years i decided i did not really need it when i could simply use vpn to achieve a similar but more secure result. heck, the qnap has QVPN, just use that. Or if you prefer, setup the openvpn on your router instead which may be better?

so i delink myqnapcloud and cloudlink

Thank you both for your replies! I actually have no interest in accessing it remotely, but ONLY considered it because I'd like push notifications. Just to be sure I understand this, accessing it via web interface on my local network is local and NOT remote, right?

I'll definitely check out those links from moogle.

But it sounds like if I don't need remote access and am just looking to get push notifications, maybe paying for a per-sms service would be a better route to go.

I appreciate your input.

Thank you. I've had my email set up since the beginning, but at least twice I've noticed that I've stopped received alerts, only to find that messages were stuck undelivered in my QNAP due to "Authorization has expired" message in the alerts menu. I use office 365 with my own domain (me@mydomain.com). I just updated with a gmail address to see if it happens again or if it's an issue with the microsft email.

I appreciate your help!
