During set up process, system prompted me to upgrade and I agreed. Got several reboots in short amount of time.
I though that was a hard drive problem because one of my drives was alerting a SMART problem, sugesting to replace it.
Searching other users posts, I found an user who sugested downgrade... so I did it and got no more reboots....
Now I have sent logs to QNAP help desk and hoping that they find a solution soon to discart a defective unit.
Jus got response from helpdesk that its a hardware issue... they didn't provide any other detail about the issue... just "its a hardware problem".
I bought this TS-253Be on US amazon and brought to Brazil, where a live so I can't return it.

if they are saying it's a hardware problem, then doesn't sound like they think it's the qts 4.4.1 random reboot issue :S not sure.

but i'm not really sure what steps you can take..... what did they say?

mine is an expensive paperweight - I shall not be buying another QNAP and once my other QNAP's (8) have given up the ghost I'm off - their RMA process is to quote for basically what is a new unit and I don't think this is right. I can build a NAS server myself and at least I replace component by component should it fail

I have a TVS-672XT with 32GB (2 x Kingston HyperX 16GB modules) and now with firmware version 4.4.1.1086. 2-3 weeks ago, suddenly the problem with the reboots started. Once the NAS rebooted, it booted up again and crashed again after a few minutes and repeated all the time. I got crazy.
My first thought was, the RAM is not ok, so I bought new RAM from a seller, who offer RAM especially for the TVS-672XT. I replaced the RAM, but now after 7 days the NAS starts crashing again.
I also reseted the NAS two times, but this didn't help.

I also opened a ticket at QNAP. Hope to get a response from them.

I tried everything I could think of and have ended selling my unit for spares or repair as the RMA cost was as much as a new unit as it was out of warranty :(

Re: random reboot issues

Post by arondee »

I’m experiencing the same thing but it doesn’t seem to matter which firmware build I’m using. I bought the qnap ts-453be about a month ago, updated it to 4.4.1.1101 and wasn’t having any trouble until I installed new memory. Then I started seeing random reboots about once a day.

Specifically I installed Crucial 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3/DDR3L 1866 MT/s (PC3-14900) Unbuffered SODIMM 204-Pin Memory - CT2K51264BF186DJ

Step 1: I rolled back the firmware to 4.3.6 and this did not fix the problem. Still rebooting randomly at the same rate.
Step 2: Removed the ram and reinstalled the 512mb that came with the qnap. This fixed everything. The device was rock solid with no reboots for 2 weeks.
Step 3: I bought new memory. Specifically Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3/DDR3L 1600 MT/S (PC3-12800) Unbuffered SODIMM 204-Pin Memory - CT2KIT51264BF160B

I’m back to having the same random reboots every 24 hours with the new memory installed.

Any ideas for things I can try or what the problem might be?

Hi guys,

I'm new here and just registered on the board to share my recent experience on the topic. I hope that my info might help you!
I bought last year a TS-653B Nas and I'm pretty satisfied and happy with it since. I'll try to keep the story short, so soon after I've bought it I sourced 2 x 8GB DDR3L RAM - Crucial.

I've replaced the stock ADATA RAM modules with these after I've ran memtest for a few hours or about 3-5 full passes with all tests selected (can't remember already the exact number of passes or the hours it took).

I'm running the NAS with the Crucial RAM since than without any issues until around Christmas 2019. I wanted to make some changes in the drive configurations/setup and to reinitialize the OS/QTS on SSD, also I had an issue that when I select to shutdown the NAS, it actually restarts gracefully instead, but 3 of 5 times it didn't power off and just restarts.

So I decided to upgrade the firmware prior reinitializing the QTS to see if this will resolve the shutdown/power off issue. Earlier (maybe in the end of the September or the beginning of November) I was upgraded the FW and QTS to 4.4.1.1064 build 20190918 and used this version stable without any issues that I've noticed, except the one shutdown one.

After the FW upgrade to the latest version 4.4.1.1146 build 20191206, re-init of the QTS, all configurations from scratch re-attaching my RAID arrays and so on... I've started experiencing random reboots of the NAS and unclean filesytems every 2 to 3 days, sometimes even under 2 days uptime.

I've then googled the problem and found this topic and soon decided to downgrade the FW/QTS back to 4.4.1.1064 build 20190918, because I was in doubt that the RAM could be the problem, as my usage cases and conditions did not change during the months and after the recent changes. I wasn't installed or used anything new as app or major setting that could cause unusual RAM usage.

To the point - finally I've detached my data RAID arrays and other disks and downgraded the FW/QTS to 4.4.1.1064 build 20190918 only with 1 x SSD as I always install the NAS and reverted the all the settings from previously taken backup of them before FW downgrade.

Almost everything went OK with restored settings and after post-configuring some minor things I've re-attached my other disks and RAIDs and so far I'm happy to report that 6 days so far - there are no random reboots!

For me QTS to 4.4.1.1064 build 20190918 hold OK for now downgraded back to it and was holding OK for about 2 months before I upgrade to the latest FW/QTS.
I'm not going to try newer version prior the last one for now as ever back and forth of FW change costs me about a day and I have a lot of TB data that I don't want to loose in try and error aspect... :-)

I hope this helps if someone wants to be on QTS 4.4.1 and wants to spent some time to try it! Wish you luck and if there is more info that I could help you with, I'll be glad to share!

Hi, I have exact the same problem with a TS-653B. It started during christmas 2019. Horrable, the system restarts up to 5 times per day.
I'll try to do the same and downgrade the system.
Hope that helps.

your case sounds like ram incompatibility.

if the only difference is your new ram, then it sounds like the new ram you are using has issues. either it's incompatible or it has errors on it. best to do memtest86 to test your ram for starters.

either buy ram from qnap store, or use crucial or kingston compatibility for your nas model to find ram that is actually compatible. don't just simply buy any ram and expect it to just work.

that doesn't really mean much. Ok since christmas, does that happen to be when you had update to 4.4.1 ? with need some meaningful clues to be able to assess what is likely to have caused your issue.

But if it is a qts 4.4.1 random reboot bug, then the solution is to downgrade back to 4.3.6 then observe if you still have random reboots or not. If you no longer do, then problem solved. But if you still do, then you need to go through the entire checklist of OTHER possible causes of random reboot. One of the likelier culprits is that the ram you are using got corrupt and needs to be replaced (usually you'd run a memtest86 to confirm this first)

Hi all,

Just wanted to keep you posted, as I haven't checked the board more than a month.
I'm still using QTS 4.4.1.1064 build 20190918 with the upgraded RAM (2 x 8GB DDR3L RAM - Crucial) and I have 33 days of uptime already. So far I'm experiencing the problem that the Media Volume constantly stays at level 0 and can't change it. It reverts to 0 every time I try to change it and this is known issue in this FW, but for my use case this does not bother me for now.
Please let me know if someone tested newest FW revisions and the random reboots every few days is fixed. I'll be thankful to you and I may try to update to newer FW and try it myself.

Thanks!

Random reboots still happening with the latest(as of a few days/week ago). Was sitting herer doing something else, when I heard my TS453Be just up and reboot for no reason.

The worst part is, after the reboot, most of the apps fail to start properly, requiring ANOTHER reboot to fix them(other than stopping and restarung every individual app).

Come on Guys, this never existed in the past. Pleas get this RIGHT.
