New user, how to set up my nas
Hello you all.
My name is Henri and I am 33 years old.
I am from the Netherlands.
And I was looking for a new hobby
Just bought an 472xt with 4x8tb Wd red.
Hope to find some information here with all you other qnap users. I am just a home user and just starting with this machine.
What I want to do for now.
Back up
Surveillance
Plex
QuMagie or qphoto
Ifttt
I was wondering how do is set up up my drives.
Do I just use 1 storage pool. Or several pools ?
Do I need to to use icsi and qtier with the NVMe ( need to buy these) or something totally different ?
Are there some other apps that you guys think that are worth installing ?
I want to get the most out of the box.
Thanks you all for the help

Re: New user, how to set up my nas
set it up as one pool in RAID5 or RAID6 (have external backups at all times)
How are we supposed to know if you need ISCSI ? .. do you need ISCSI ? None of the uses you mentioned need lots of random disks performance (cache or tier)

My friends say icsi is a good and secure way to go.
So just a basic installation will do the job just fine.
When do I need icsi ? when I use vm ? Or docker station ?

What external system do you have that would need a block storage ISCSI target on your NAS? Best to ask your friend that gave you that advice !
If you are planning to use the NAS by itself and share files in your network, just go with file storage (shares)

to most users, owning a NAS is a necessity for data storage. Use to be we had vinyl for music, and polaroids for pictures. now everything is digital these days, and you need reliable storage for them.
^-^; so spend on what you actually need. but i see based on your hardware, you are onto a good start.

You could take a look at the kindle book “qnap setup guide” by Nicolas Rushton. The latest version is for QTS 4.4.n. It should cover most subjects that you will be interested in

Re: New user, how to set up my nas
I have created a storage pool in raid 5. All 4 drives
I need your advise.
The volume do I set this up for the full 100% or is it better to use more volumes ?
Afcourse it depends on how I use it. But what is your advise ? I can make a volume bigger if I need more space ? After it’s already being created and in use ?

Re: New user, how to set up my nas
if you need no features like block iscsi lun or snapshots..just do one single static volume..otherwise do a single thick volume (leave as little or lot space on the poolas you like..size can be changed later)

I have maked a storage pool
Does it make sense to make volumes like this ?
Volume for photos
Volume for time machine
Volume for media
Volume for surveillance
Or just 1 big think volume ?

Re: New user, how to set up my nas
I think I will give that book a try.
So just to be clear.
100% storage pool
100% volume
And then make several shares under this ?
