TVS-873e and Nvidia GPU

Post by jj452 »

I am looking at purchasing the TBS-873e. The only thing stalling my purchase is finding confirmation if this model supports a PCI-E GPU to enable H265 hardware accelerated transcoding. Either with an nvidia or AMD GPU with either Plex or QNAP apps.

Can anyone confirm this for me?

All information seems to point to the TSx73 range supporting this but the TVS-x73e range not (at least not officially).

The e range from my view has the R7 GPU built in -

"Integrated Radeon R7 GPU for 4K video playback ; Two PCIe slots support 10GbE adapters, QM2 cards, USB 3.1 10Gbps cards, or wireless network cards"

But does "4K video playback" have anything to do with being able to transcode !!??

I give my opinion from my experience i.e. I have (or had) that piece of equipment/software and used it!

Thank you for your reply!

Yes, the TVS-873e has the builtin R7 GPU which can do realtime 1080p and 4k transcoding. The only issues appears to be that this is limited to H264 video.

I can see that the TVS-873 (non e version) accepts a low power GPU and can use this for video transcoding - new low-power GPUs can transcode h264 and h265. If the "e version" does not accept a low power GPU and the "non e" version does surely the cheaper "non e version" is the much better buy?

Ideally I'd like the TVS-873e now as most video content I have is h264 and have the knowledge that in the future I can add in a GPU when my content moves to H265 - I just cannot find any confirmation that it supports this.

TVS-873e and Nvidia GPU

Actually be careful as there are different versions of this line.

TVS-x73(e): AMD CPU with built embedded GPU. Embedded GPU hw transcoding is ONLY supported in QTS apps and NOT Plex currently.

TS-x73: AMD CPU with NO GPU. Supports addition of GPU which can be used in QTS mode (think Plex HW transcoding with Plexpass subscription)
