VM for Windows Server 2016 with RDP server

Post by snoeiman »

I have a small business (10 persons) with currently running a HP Proliant with Esxi on it (Windows Server 2003 AD, Windows Server 2016 for RDP).
Was wondering if it is possible to migrate towards a QNAP and install a VM on it with Windows Server 2016 (and RDP server), Active Directory can be done by the QNAP itself (right?).

I have approximately 10 users which login via a thin client to do their work (also connecting to a web (cloud) based portal for patient details).

Is this possible to deploy on a QNAP, will the users encounter lag/delays if they are (i.e.) all logged in? Or can this easily be handled by a QNAP (maybe an extra GPU will help?)

Would be great to see your comments / thoughts

I would be cautious on this and make sure you buy from someplace with a good return policy.

ESXi has a lot more features, lower overhead, etc. than QNAP’s VS.

What is making you consider switching HW platforms vs just doing a Windows upgrade on your existing box?

As was mentioned, I would look at a fairly beefy Ryzen box (maybe even a new QTS Hero version) or Xeon based QNAP.
