Need help with TS-453B mini fan noise/temperature

Post by afjochnick »

Hi, long time QNAP user here.

I need some help/suggestions to understand why my server is hot and always runs the fan, despite not doing anything. It runs all through the night for example, when absolutely nothing is /should be going on.

My temperature is generally 34-36C. Our room temperature is around 20C.
If i look at the Dashboard, it is 3-15% usually, if i run top it's usually at 95-97% idle, but in both cases it periodically goes lower.

I have tried turning off all stuff i can think of - multimedia station, Web, ftp, etc and basically any built-in app i can turn off. The only thing running are things i cannot turn off and malware remover.

Does anyone have any tips as to what i can look at and what actions i can take to get the temperature and fan activity down? Perhaps 34-38C is to be expected, but i think it's too high. My macbook pro fan almost never runs and i do way more stuff on that one.

Pointers much appreciated.

I have it set to quiet and automatically adjust.

It's really becoming a huge nuisance, right now the fans are at 1600 RPM for most of the day.

I installed q'center, and it says that the processor averages at around 12% throughout the day. To me this seems like a lot given that i've turned off everything that i can. What is it doing?
CPU temp averages on or above 50 celsius, system at 35-40.
Fan goes up and down all day between 500-1600 RPM.
Disk temp (4 disks) averages at just under 50 C.

I have it configured like this, because in automatic and without temperature control, it was elevated, so I have it controlled.

Now the fan the maximum I saw of RPM was 1100, it never went up again and it was a peak. In general the RPM is between 560, 800, 960 and 1060, always this RPM speed is fluctuating.

My config in TS-453B fan is this:

Thanks man! I'm about to try a similar thing, hopefully it'll work better after that.

Tell me now how it works for you please. If you can add an image like I did, do you cheer up? I want to see your CPU and HDD temperatures.

Sorry for super late response, but here's an image. The big difference seems to be the hard drives... Mine are at 48 Celsius. I have no idea why they run so hot, it's not like they have any jobs they're doing... We are super annoyed.
