Expected lifespans for SMB/Home NAS

Post by ts-412-user »

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new NAS, however I'm concerned with the avialability of support (mainly security updates but also funtional updates).
Looking at the product support status page, I'm confused why entry-level devices such as the TS-412 will become eol after about 8 years (2012-2020) while more expensive devices such as the TS-453A last only 4 years (2016-2020). I'm not sure if I got the dates right as I did not find a release date per product, so I just googled.
I'm keen on a used TS-453BE which is being sold at 380€ but I would like to have an idea on how long I'll be able to use the device securely.

Does anyone have an idea on what QNAP's policy on the functional/security lifecyle is and what 4-bay Intel-based NAS is the best value at the moment in terms of price vs. lifespan? I don't need any specific other functionalities, I just run it as a flieshare and some very small LXC-containers, hence the Intel-based devices.
I know the TS-453D has just been rolled out, but apparently the TS453BE is only 2 years old, so I'd rather go with saving 200€ if I get 2 years less support. I'm not sure about the TS-451* series, it seems the TS-451+ is the latest but it's apparently already 5 years old.
Thanks in advance!

i have a feeling that the x19 ARM series was supported for that long, as it didn't have HDMI

QNAP has said in the past that some device support was discontinued, as intel dropped the driver support for certain iGPU chipsets

x51 is plentyfold

x51
x51+
x51B (2bay only)
x51C (2bay only)
x51D
x51N/X

Thanks dolbyman,
does that mean the x453 series (including the TS-453Be) is a safer option for me?

not sure what the safest option is ..could be that the x19 series was one of qnaps first all around popular units..and we just got lucky with the long support?

best advice would be to get one of the latest x86/x64 units (x51D ..or so) .. maybe with the best chance of longest support from this point (everything else is just speculation)

I would second this advice. x64 units are easier to support long term as ARM is going through very quick cycles to get into the higher power market and are dropping support quickly for older mobile aimed designs (mobile phone lifecycles are short).
