"Nvidia is acquiring Arm for $40 billion"

Post by OneCD »

https://www.theverge.com/2020/9/13/2143 ... ps-ai-deal
Nvidia said Sunday it is acquiring chipmaker Arm from SoftBank for $40 billion. Arm will operate as an division of Nvidia and will remain headquartered in the UK, and, will “continue to operate its open-licensing model, while maintaining its global customer neutrality,” the company said. But the deal is still likely to face intense regulatory scrutiny.

SoftBank bought Arm in 2016 for $31 billion. The British company’s chips power mobile device processors for companies including Apple, Samsung, and Qualcomm. Arm has likely only increased in value since the SoftBank acquisition, with Microsoft making an ARM-based Surface and a version of Windows for Arm, and Apple planning to switch future Macs to Arm-based chips.

Nvidia is the leading maker of GPUs, which Arm also designs, but other than its Tegra line of mobile chipsets used in devices like the Nintendo Switch, Nvidia doesn’t do much in the way of CPU design or mobile hardware.

Speaking to Forbes, Nvidia CEO CEO Jensen Huang said that his first priority after the acquisition would be to “bring NVIDIA technology through Arm’s vast network.” However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Arm will change its current licensing model. Bloomberg reports that “Huang said Nvidia is spending a lot of money for the acquisition and has no incentive to do anything that would cause clients to walk away.”

Arm will continue to be headquartered in Cambridge, UK and Nvidia says it will invest in building a new AI research center there. Nvidia is positioning the acquisition as setting up the next stage of AI computing. Both Nvidia and Arm see opportunities for growth in enabling AI software that can run on Arm’s chips from those on tiny smartphones to huge servers.

Nvidia once had big ambitions to make CPUs for phones but had little success. This acquisition could obviously change that, but it appears that at least initially the focus will be on data centers. “What will change is the rate of our roadmap. We know for sure that data centers and clouds are clamoring for the Arm microprocessor, the Arm CPU,” Huang tells Forbes. “Energy efficiency directly translates to computing capacity, computing throughput, and the cost of provisioning service.”

The news underscores just how successful Nvidia has been in the past five years, focusing on areas like GPUs, self-driving cars, and AI.

Even without a presence in mobile, Nvidia’s value has soared in the past decade. The stock, which ended 2010 at $15.42 a share, closed Friday at $486.58. That’s given it a market value of just more than $300 billion, almost $100 billion more than Intel, the world’s largest chipmaker with seven times the revenue of Nvidia.

a 9 billion plus for softbank over 4 years(good for them)...they wish UBER would pay that much ..right now UBER is just a money grave to kill competition

anyways ... lets see what happens ..nvidia should know the microchip business

This is not a good thing for the computing industry at all, NVIDIA only does what is good for NVIDIA.

ARM has had the model of licensing (relatively cheaply too) their designs to whomever wanted a license, that is not how NVIDIA conducts its business.

I am quite surprised that Tim Cook has remained publicly silent on the deal so far, NVIDIA and Apple have not had the best of business relationships in recent years.

Nvidia and Apple have a horrible relationship. So will this mean no more AMD GPU's in a new Apple computer !!! LOL !
Nvidia purchased Mellanox (The 40G company), and I really don't see what big things they have done with it. You would think that they would turn this
into a new low priced standard - but they have not.

Well when Apple switches from intel to ARM based homebrew CPUs, then NVIDIA will make money on every ARM based Apple product sold.

That is not the green goblin's business practice. They don't deal with end users, they deal only with "business partners" and they do not believe in any sort of low priced standard, Jen-Hsun is one greedy mofo and his personal battle against Intel and Apple (AMD was left in the dust a decade ago) means he wants the highest margins possible.

I suspect the reason for the Mellanox purchase is for their datacentre compute platforms, and to lock everyone else out from using the same technology, thereby given the NVIDIA a leg up on compute performance.

For now. We'll see what happens when the current licensing agreements come to term. I suspect NVIDIA will require new ARM license agreements required the use of NVIDIA graphics technology instead of Mali, or maybe NVIDIA will integrate the better parts of the Mali design in to their own designs.

UK watchdog begins investigating Nvidia's $40bn takeover of Arm

Post by jaysona »

Hopefully this is a deal that ultimate gets blocked, at at the very least has some strict restrictions attached to the acquisition.
