interface fatal error

Post by Serruxo »

Hello everybody, specially TS-453A owners

I am trying to repair my TS-453A after reading some threads here and doing tests.

However I never had "unplugged device" but checking the logs, I got ramdom errors on sata2 port like these but I did not find the reason.
Sometimes I got on QTS the warning message that volume had to be reconstructed or rechecked, but never the HDD on sata2 was unplugged.

I have tested with the original 4Gb ADATA memory modules (2Gb + 2Gb) (normaly I work with 16 Gb), tested with another power supply, tested different disks... but all of them do not impact. I cleaned very well all the sata connectos and rest of components using an specific liquid for cleaning electronics, but it did not affected. Also removed dust inside the sata connectors and checked all the pins are well.

That is an example shwon on the logs:

The QNAP backplane is QX67 Rev: 2.0, like attached picture.
TS-453A-HDD-backplane-QX67.JPG
I replaced a pair of MOSFET located in the right bottom corner "E6P02" (NTMD6P02R2) and both transistors "702"(NDS7002A) but error logs persist, in spite I did a full hard reset deleting all QTS operating system.

Maybe during the soldering I could have damaged the mosfet due a high temperature (380 ºC), so I am cosidering to replace them again and check again.

What I would know if how can I check with a multimeter that they are OK. Can they be checked with the NAS powered off? Do I need to switch on the NAS? Do I need to insert the HDD into the sata2 port and check with a multimeter? I read something about checking with a multimeter but I am not sure the procedure, exactly if I need to check the continuity between the pins of the MOFSFET and the pins of the SATA connector, and if I need to have the HDD inserted and the NAS powered on.

Anyone could provide some help about this, to discover where is the problem? Maybe I would need to replace another component like resistor or capacitor.

Also I have some doubts about other alternatives to solve this. ¿Would work the TS-453 Pro backplane in this TS-453A? Pro model is similar but has white pins connectors... that A model does not have. Other alternative could be The TS-453Be backplane but I realized that the form and position of the SATA connectors is different. Somebody has tested other backplanes in theirs models? The bus connector is PCI, so I think it could work.

Thanks in advance!

While I can't help you with your specific questions the errors don't look like the power problems discussed here. My guess is a problem on the SATA bus. I suggest checking the disk drive in another system and trying a different drive in the slot to see whether the problem is with the drive or the NAS.

I think you should start your own topic for this. :-)
Good luck!

Thanks for your help but I see you might have not read that I tested different disks... the problem is not the drive as I said so it seems is in the sata backplane.

From my point of view my case is related than others written the thread

"Disk Failed", then "Disk Unplugged" errors"
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=134212&start=540

where I had published my resquest of help.

I am not confident about spliting into a new topic will help me so much, specially regarding the my microlectronic questions (using multimeter and how to check the mosfets) like others similar that where answered.

Problems with faulty MOSFETs (used for power distribution and switching) have nothing to do with SATA interface errors. That's why your topic was split. ;)

Sorry I can not understand well. Could you please clarify this? What do you mean exactly?
In that thread people have suggested changing the mosfets regarding the sata errors...

I understood the SATA connector have two parts: the data pinout and the power pinout.... something is wrong in my backplane regarding all this and I am trying to understand where is the problem.

Thanks

Can you please link to these suggestions? I haven't read all of that topic.

There are some references about replacing the mosfets or bypassing them in the backplane.
Other references talk about using an external power supply with other SATA cable... to discard power problem.

For example please take a look:

viewtopic.php?f=25&t=134212&hilit=backplane&start=390
https://www.weblabsperth.com.au/qnap_nas_backplane_fix/
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=134212&hilit=backplane&start=480
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=134212&hilit=backplane&start=495

I undertand that that thread might be very extensive and could be a good idea split all the messages regarding electronic reparations on the backplane to have all ordered.

Thanks for your help.

You're not experiencing the same symptoms as shown in those posts, are you? :S

Sorry but I do not understand this discussion.
From my point of view symptoms are similar regarding the SATA connector. My logs are similar than other logs published there.

Sorry I did not specified this.
4x disks WD60EFRX - 68L0BN1 (Western Digital Red 6TB 5400RPM SATA 6GB/s 64MB),
wd60efrx.JPG
working since first day on 2016 when I purchased the NAS. All disks were fully tested (no bad sectors without errors) and were exchanged testing them in the SATA2 port that is the one that has problems. The rest of SATA ports work well and they are not shown on the logs.

I can say that the newer disk I am testing only have 95 days working. Rest near 300 days.

As I said I did a lot of tests.

Thanks.
