hx86 suitable for VM?

Post by syncthing »

hi,
the h1288 has a Xeon W-1250 and I found some passmark benchmark tests: 14137
the h686 has a Xeon D-1602 with passmark: 2459
the h886 has a Xeon D-1622 - can't find a passmark value but I guess it could be similar to the 1602

would the D-1602 be suitable for some virtual machines - or will the speed of the VM be unusable (ie some celerons also have those kind of benchmark values and IMHO they are not suitable for VM usage)

which other tower nas would be suitable for VM usage?

Hi,

I use VM's on my TS-h886, I run 2 windows 10 VM's.
Concerning performance the Xeon D-1622 is definitely no powerhouse.
I even have the idea that performance is slightly less than my old TVS-682, which has a core-I3 processor, where I ran the same VM's.

On the other hand, the VM's run just fine for normal / adobe / office applications.
On one of the VM's I usualy run transcoding tasks.
This also does not run that great (performance wise), but it's ok, because I can let it be and it keeps running, no real need for more power.

So concerning your first questions, yes this works for VM's, but it depends a little on what you want to do with them I guess.

IMHO it is very hard to justify buying any hx86 units. You either have to really need the ECC memory or need QTShero feature so much that you are willing to pay a lot for an obsolete platform. The x72 is a much better platform for the price and for more obviously the hx88 is the more current and better choice for VMs.

it depends on what you wanna do inside the VM's and how many you want running at the same time.

I think people are buying the hx86 units for QuTS hero and the better data protection provided by ZFS. It's too bad QNAP doesn't off it on the x72 units though. Not sure why they're restricting it to just certain platforms.

D-1622 is a quad-core while D-1602 is only a dual-core. So the1622 should be significantly better than the 1602.
It may not be a powerhouse. But it should have performed better than the i3 in the 682. If that has not been the case, perhaps there is some issue tech support could help with.

I don't know what you got this idea from. There is no way the D1602 would come close to the i3 in the x82 let alone the x72 which is newer:
They are one architecture generation apart with the x82 being newer (skylake vs Broadwell) and are clocked to very different TDPs. The x82 to 51W and the x86 to 27W. They don't even come close. The D-1602 is a dog.
CPUmark: D1602(x86) is ~2400, Core i3 6100(x82) is ~4100, core i3 8100T(x72) is ~5300

The D-1622 on the other hand is equivalent to the i7-5700HQ in TDP down so it should be slightly slower than the i7 in the comparison below.

I am referring to the 1622. I am saying the 4 core 1622 should be more powerful than the 2 core i3 in the 82 series.

Ohh I see. then yes you are right. the D1622 is an i7-5700HQ which should have a CPUmark in the 5000s though the single threaded performance should actually be on par or slower than the i3.
