DO NOT design your network like this!! // FREE CCNA // EP 6

in the video he says daisy chaining switches is bad. and instead to connect all those multiple switches direct into the router.

but the thing is, my main switch is a 24 port poe switch. But i connect to another switch in a different room.

I thought doing so with just 1 extra switch would not be too bad.

Or should i instead be connecting the 2nd switch to my qotom pfsense router 2nd port?

Thing is though i did not yet configure those extra ports (because so far i was getting by fine with just 2 ethernet ports. 1 for wan, the other for lan. so i didn't bother setting up the remaining 2-3 ethernet ports i had on it).

So should i bother doing that or is it not that big a deal? :' because to my understanding, his reasoning is fewer points of failure. but for myself the failure isn't going to be a life or death situation (i'd figure out if a switch is down and fix it. yes there is some downtime but no big deal, also this seems to be a rare event anyway), nor do i ever turn off the main switch which the secondary switch connects to it. so that was why i did not consider this an issue

I tried to watch the video, but the bloke in-it is exhibiting all the classic signs of a post-grad university jerk. 99% of what he says can be ignored, as (for-now) he's only adept at applying his "hard-won" university skills of debate and misrepresentation. He hasn't learned how to behave in polite society yet. There's no shortage of these opinionated jerks on YouTube. I ignore them, as they haven't matured into adults.

Make up your own mind about your network. Does your network do what you want? That's all that matters. Image

full ack with onecd

IMHO it's very easy to find a broken switch to switch link and fix it ... nothing compared to find the problem in a thin ethernet environment long time ago, that really 's ucked' :)

Sadly, it is not just that these types are jerks, they also do not know what it is that they do not know, which ultimately results in the slightly blind leading the blind.

This is how I explain these type to those that I mentor;

The general population are six-to-eight-year old children in the school yard playground, the youtube types are teenagers that think they know it all, then there are the adults in the school yard. The children and teenagers prefer to rebel against the adults by ignoring them, the teenagers think they know enough to get by and that the adults are just trying to control them and the children are happy to listen to the teenagers.

I'm fine with that, I will advise the teenagers of their errors - once and only once. If they choose to ignore my advice, then their wares are open game for me. ;)

I'm firmly of the view university graduates should be required to attend a finishing school for 1 year. In this school, every time they open their mouths to offer an unsolicited opinion, the nearest "educator" gives them a solid back-hander (you can probably tell: I was raised in a time corporal punishment was commonplace in Australian schools). :DD

Without such corrective treatment, it can take a good 5 to 10 years for these people to become civilised. I suspect the aforementioned jerk will need the full 10 years.

Just pointing out his solutions are VERY expensive and most homes and small businesses are not going to spend the kind of income his "perfect" solution would require. The real world has to work within a real budget and still turn a profit at the end of the day.

i noticed in another video by lawrence, he showed daisy chaining switches (for myself i connected 1 switch to another. and then the primary switch to the pfsense router), and he never pointed out it was an issue :' so hm...

Imagine letting your dog chew you network connection in the first place. I suggest NetworkChuck has no control over his dog. what does that tell you about him really.

As to joining switches. Well as long as your switch throughput is not saturated by multiple devices at once, there is NO issue in doing this, unless NetworkChuck has come round with his dog and its off the lead and eating your cabling.

The video is more for medium to large infrastructures with multiple buildings/floors, and asking you to build in resilience - not for average joe and his 2-3 NAS's and IoT devices.

Completely agree. I also firmly believe that no person should be granted any sort of university diploma without performing at least one years worth of practical work experience in their chosen filed and one of their elective fields. I have dealt with far too many fresh out of university people that think they know it all, and then when presented with a real world problem, their eyes glaze over and they have that deer in the headlights look.

Sadly, I have encountered more people that I care to admit, that even after a decade or more of business-world experience, are still presumptive arrogant idiots, and what ever business problems they encounter are always the fault of someone else.

I have four 8-port switches daisy chained between my plex server int he living room and my Internet connections (I have three) located in my office. I can achieve full gigabit speeds when copying files between servers, never an issue. 20 years ago, daisy chaining switches might have been problem for some cheaper consumer switches due to the use of less robust chip designs, but todays switching fabrics are all full speed across all ports.

As soon as his example mentioned a coffee shop, I checked out. The guy has no idea about practical business experience and how a small service industry business works. I ran a bar for a few years, and still provide tech. support for a few fiends that run bars, bistro restaurants, etc, none of them have anything close to what this d-bag is spewing, nor do they have the funds to install and support all the that. Most bars, restaurants, coffee shops, etc operate on razor thin margins.

This guy is out of touch with reality and out to lunch.
