Need help setting up TR-004 to Windows PC

Post by andrewerodriguez »

Hi QNAP community,

I am a filmmaker who purchased a TR-004 with four Seagate Ironwolf 8tb drives with hopes that I could set up a RAID5 group. I plan on transferring footage onto here after I'm done editing on my main nvme drives.

I am a complete beginner to all of this. I was able to download QNAP External RAID Manager to update my TR-004's firmware to the latest version, and I was also able to setup a RAID5 group.

However, it says unformatted under format on QNAP External RAID Manager so I figure that is probably why I can't see the RAID5 group as a disk when I open up File Explorer (I'm not sure if that is how its supposed to be accessed to be honest).

When I click on unformatted, it says: Created RAID Group "TR-004 RAID Group 1". To format the RAID Group as a disk, use Windows Disk management or third party software EaseUS Partition Master.

When I click on Windows Disk Management, a prompt shows up asking me to initialize a disk before Logical Disk manager can access it. Disk 1 is selected, and it gives me two options for the partition style of the selected disk: MBR or GPT. What do I choose?

Also, what are the next steps I should take when formatting the drives through Windows Disk management? Or is it easy enough for a complete noob like me to understand?

Thank you!

Hi andrew,

hm... i hope you aren't planning on using this type of device for video editing directly from? you should try get advise from bob who is an expert on that subject

anyhow, in regards to formating the drives is easy

try gpt first if that works. then use the tr-004 windows app to configure raid5 on the device.

Mike explains how this device works and is setup

however in mike's example, he was setting up via qts attaching the tr-004 to a qnap nas. i recommend you setup via the windows app to create the raid5

you can go to the product page and check the manual to find out what is the difference between RAID 5 (supports 3 or 4 drives) and Software control modes using the dip switches.
HTWingNut-

If you use Software RAID you can control the RAID with the Windows or Mac software they provide. It will still be hardware RAID. You can then plug it into any other PC and it will see it as a single drive as configured with the software.

Thank you so much Moogle! I really appreciate your help. Those videos really helped clear some of my questions up.

After selecting GPT, should I format the disk using NTFS or another format? I don't plan on editing on the TR-004. I plan on editing off the NVME drives and storing the final cuts and footage onto the TR-004 once I'm finished with each project. The files will be pretty big.

Thanks!

so you are sure the qnap external raid manager told you to format the drives first using disk management yeah? or did it say it can format the drives using the qnap app?

anyway just select ntfs, once you are done, go back to the qnap app, create the raid, and you should be done (raid5 ext4 if that is an option) :)

Thanks again Moogle.

To answer your question: Yes, when I click on "unformatted", it prompts me to go to disk management first. I had already created a RAID5 group using QNAP Eternal Raid manager. I remember going through this very same prompt but for RAID5: https://i0.wp.com/www.thestreamingblog. ... =615&ssl=1

I don't think the QNAP External RAID Manager app ever gave me the option to format the drives using the same app.

I'm at work at the moment but I will report back to you later once I try your advice about formatting the drives using NTFS. After formatting them using NTFS, would I have to recreate the raid group using the QNAP External RAID Manager app?

thx for clarifying.

plz do report back how it goes, especially the part after you make the software create the raid5, what are the options provided?

correct. i don't have a tr-004 so i can't fully say for sure how it works, i'm just guiding you along since i know how the qnap stuff generally tends to work. but i do have a tl-d400s, but the way that was done is to create the raid5 from qts. but with the tr-004 series you can create the raid directly on the tr-004 since it has hardware i believe? my model does not :(
