TVS-H1288X black cardboard around cpu sink and fan!!

Post by NOMADPLAYER »

Hello all, Setting up TVS-H1288X. There is a black cardboard box around lower fan above ram and nvme slots which also covers some of the massive cpu sink. Is this for airflow between the sink and ram/nvme ssd's?? Just seemed different when I removed fans to install ram and nvme's. Should I just leave it alone, which is my inclination!!?? No present in quick installation guide, which is minimal at best!! But that's another issue!! Thanks in advance for any response!!

I had no cardboard on my CPU heat sink .. just two blowers pointing to it

Can you take some pictures of it ? (just attach them to the forum)

Looks like it's there for airflow guidance. Leave it in. Image

My thoughts exactly. dolbyman...Wonder if you are missing any air flow vectorization...etc....??

I did not have any cardboard flow guides there for sure (and I had the NAS apart for NVME install) Maybe QNAP switched CPU cooler size at one point and needed to make up a guide quick and dirty (because what company uses cardboard for a final product)?

I got mine in March 2022 (graciously) supplied by QNAP via CDW rep.

If it wasn't a huge pain in the behind .. I would pull my NAS out to check tonight .. also the phillips screws they used to hold the case on, defy all but one bitset I have (all the other ones slip)

I just looked at the servethehome review .. they have this cardboard in there too .. crazy

Cardboard is cheaper than redesigning the whole system when some engineer miscalculated a CFM rate or some component was out of spec and ran hot. LOL
