No..these disk have an LVM layer..use a special reader or a new QNAP NAS to read the data

Also apprently you have no backuos...single disks and no backups is some very stange setup if the data is of any importance

for the important data I do have backups (photos, family videos). From these disk I would recover films and shows what I've downloaded and would take long time to download them again.
Btw new QNAP: if I purchase a new two disk Intel based QNAP and plug my 1st and second disks there, all of my stuff will be available again without deleting the data from my disks? My apps were installed on disk1 and films on disk2 and disk3. If I put the disks into the new nas, it will start with my settings (ie ip, accounts, apps) and the data on disk2 will be available for me?
We are going on holiday on Monday, so it would be great to have everything back in original state at least for the holiday...

and also re lvm: ext2read app has lvm2 support. Does this means, it can read my qnap single disk?

Success with 100 Ohm and without measurement!!! The biggest problem was finding such a thin wire. I used a wire from a ribbon cable. Soldering is only possible with a magnifying glass and a steady hand. I put a drop of hot glue on it for mechanical fixation. For the mass I used the shielding of a socket.

Yes, another success story here :)

Model: TS-251.
Got an error message yesterday about the system fan.
Status light blinking randomly green, no red lights.
Red lights appeared first after demounting the NAS.

Measured 2.4 V between pin 1 and 8.
100 Ohm resistor did the trick as stated, beautiful!

Will continue to use the nas until it breaks down again, but taking backups more frequently.

Its a shame, this model has functioned really god until now.

Have been using it with 16GB for use with virtualization.

Looking at a new NAS from QNAP or Synology with corresponding support for 16 GB is quite expensive nowadays.

But anyway, thanks to all for adding value to this forum, just discovered it yesterday!

“Will continue to use the nas until it breaks down again, but taking backups more frequently.”

It would be great to know the % of devices that have been affected by this issue and also the % that failed (if any) after applying the fix. Even very rough estimates would be useful to have.

To help people using the multimeter properly, I did a quick search on the youtube to find one that provides a short tutorial that covers AC vs DC. When you can measure the household voltage(AC 110V/120V or 220V/240V) from the power socket correctly, that means your current multimeter setting is NOT suitable for the "DC" measurement here. Hope this will help some folks here.

First of all: big kudos to OT for this finding (and the solution, even if it is temporary).

Yesterday, i went down to my 253-pro unit and found the fans screaming at full throttle and acting dead in general (and of course, no "tricks" helped to remedy the situation). So after finding this thread i did the 100ohm resistor modification and it now runs again (and i have made sure to back up anything of importance to external HDD as well). While i do consider getting a 253E unit (only bad thing is that it is capped at the embedded 8GB whereas i run the 253-pro with 16GB since i'm using Docker, etc quite heavily) i guess it is how it is.

Big thumbs up.
