What HDD to replace with?

Post by SykesIT » Mon Sep 18, 2023 5:23 pm

Hi I have an older TS-469L and one of my HDD has started showing errors. I only use this to backup my main NAS and run as JBOD.

The drives I currently have in are WD60EFAX 6TB. Obviously these are now dis continued but would like to go to 8TB and replace each one as they fail but the QNAP compatibility only shows 2 drives that are compatible at 8TB.

Can anyone recommend a cheap disk that should work, was going to look at Ironwolf and I know my current disks are WD and would be a different manufacturer but should it make that much difference?

Thanks

Any NAS drive should work, only choose CMR drives

cheap?

well for nas drives there are ironwolf NON PRO, or western digital red PLUS. Toshiba N300? *my preference is seagate because it works and the RMA works great for me.

the 4tbs i find quite cheap, but if you need 8tb, then get that then.

You can mix match seagate and wd it will work. But to my understand when rpm and read/write is different, then your performance will average out or something. Ideally you want matching but if not it's not gonna be too big a deal.

biggest issue is when mix matching different capacity sizes. that should usually be a temporary measure until you can make all at the highest capacity sizes when making a raid 5/6 volume. different story if you're simply setting them up as single drive volumes i guess :'

You can refer to the raid calculator to see for yourself what USABLE storage space you will get

https://www.qnap.com/en-as/selector/raid-selector

if you plan to get western digital, make sure it's plus. the non plus MAY be SMR which is not what you want since they are terrible drives especially for raid (to sum is up, WD tried to silenty sell SMR for raid, later people found out so WD had to rebrand PLUS to indicate is CMR drives)

also another thing to pay attention to is read/write and cache. Cause when shopping i notice price difference for same brand drive capacity, but with a slightly different model number. the reason for this was one was newer than the other. the newer had more cache and r/w. so yeah you could get the older model but it will have less performance. the price difference usually isn't too much, so i would go for the better spec version, especially since i'm using multi gig networking these days.

and don't buy 2nd hand drives. get new under warranty (usually is between 3-5 years). Check if the RMA process works for you. I did seagate rma twice and both times i got a replacement roughly within 2 weeks without having to pay for shipping. Also my replacements worked without issue.

You stated "you run this backup NAS as JBOD"

Read this:
https://www.qnap.com/en-us/how-to/faq/a ... raid-group

Since this is a backup, put in a new drive, reinitialize the TS-469L, and start to backup your main NAS.
Might want to do a Raid 5 this time for fault tolerance.
