Auto Upload from foreign countries

Post by kmat3 »

Hi everyone,
I'd like to get your advice.
My home country is Japan and have QNAP NAS there but now I'm living in the U.S.
Since I have two kids, I have been taking many pictures/videos and want to upload those to the NAS in Japan from the US.
I'm connecting to the NAS via myQnapCloud with iPhone app. However, it's not stable.
Pictures --- no problem. I can upload automatically.
Videos --- Im having problem. Sometimes the app crashes and sometimes upload fails.
Does anyone have good idea to make it stable ?

Thank you in advane.

Personally point one, dont use myQnapCloud. full stop.

use a VPN. Something like OpenVPN, Wireshark etc. then remote into the NAS and upload from wherever you are in the world. if you need a hostname you can use one of the free ddns providers and setup ddns on the nas so you connect to a Dynamic Domain name rather than an IP address. you will need to open the required port on you router and forward this to your NAS (or other device that runs the VPN server) but that about it.

I've not used the Qnap VPN service so dont know how reliable it is. I use OpenVPN server on another device for my remote sessions back home. I also have Teleport VPN which is part of my Unifi Network to get into my home network if needed.

Although using a VPN into your home router is the ideal way to go, it sounds like all you need is a simple file share or photo share like standard google apps or, in tour case, whatever Apple has to offer.

yep. and if you have amazon Prime, it comes with unlimited amazon photo storage, but only 5GB video storage by default.

Thank you, Toxic17 and dosborne.
Since I'm not familiar with VPN, I have some concernes around seucirty things for using VPN. That's why I chosen using myQnapCloud.
I have 4k videos and keep them in high quality without any deterioration, I don't want to use cloud storages. Also I wanna keep these valuable pictures and videos of my kids for more than 30 years, I want to store them myself.
I think I should buy one more NAS in the US and restore them into Japanese's one when I go back to Japan.

Thank you for your advise.

MyQNAPcloud is data suicidal port forwarding
QNAPCloudLink is using a QNAP relay...not exposing your NAS but QNAP can/could see all files you send over..if you are afraid of cloud services, then this is sktechy too

A VPN service you control yourself is the only secure and private way here (no this does not cost any fees)

Then ensuring you have a FULL backup plan on place should be your IMMEDIATE concern well before you care about anything else.

Decide what you need to plan to protect against (drive failure, NAS failure, theft, versioning, fire, flood, power outage, accidental deletion, purposeful deletion, etc) and have a plan that covers it. For example, manual backup to and external hard drive weekly rotated and stored offsite - a good starting point for many users but doesn't fill everyone's needs on its own.

Then, think about remote access. A VPN is significantly MORE secure (running on your router or other secure device - NOT your NAS) than the options available through QNAP.
