Hi,
We have a Qnap that's mapped to windows 11 PCs. We find it absolutely unusable, it sometimes takes 20-30 seconds to open the mapped drive. It is up to date; I've disabled as many apps as possible - nothing much other than firewall/antivirus & multimedia console enabled. I've logged a job with support. Its only a lower end QNAP as only 1-2 ppl will actively use it at any time, however 30 users will be mapped to it at a time. We have a 6 year old synology that was also a lower end model that worked fine, just ran out of disk space.
But for the future use of this box:
What is the best way to view photos that are on the Qnap. Its currently indexing the drives/creating thumbnails. Some folders will have 1500 images in them. Is it best to just go through the mapped drive and view thumbnails as if its a windows server; or should they be using some sort of funky web interface to it?
Cheers
Blue

What model are we talking about?
Why is Antivirus or Firewall active? Remove both!
Multimedia Console can also be removed or disabled(not needed)
Use the QNAP as a NAS and mount the share(s) to the client computers

Even my low end model, when used as just a NAS, works just fine and there is no delay when accessing the SMB shares from win11, android, etc.
Much of the "delay" could be assigned to the indexing taking all the resources. Once it has completed, and you've removed the other unnecessary apps, see how the performance changes. (You can also check the resource indicators now and you will likely confirm indexing is causing a huge system hit)
It could also be configuration related. Or, could simply be a lack of resources. Personally, I'd ditch thumbnails. If you want a robust image software, don't rely on the "freebee" included as a marketing tool.
Your (unspecified) firmware version could also have some, although likely minimal, impact on performance too. (There are numerous firmware streams so "current" or "up to date" is meaningless. When talking about firmware, please specify an actual release number as reference)

Indexing was turned off and it still ran like a dog unfortunately. At the moment I'll let it finish. It started raid scrubbing over the weekend so I'll let that complete too before I do any further drastic changes - for now both are set to low priority.
Firmware is QTS 5.2.0.2860
Does it have a swap file of some sort? Is there way of increasing it? I read one post about something alluding to it but haven't found a technical doc.
For now I'm still after a response to the original question which is best wait to view images. Is there a web interface somewhere that I should investigate or just use it as a mapped drive / file explorer thumbnails?
Thanks for your reply its very appreciated.

Re: Photo sharing best methods
Thanks I'm closing the topic as technical support are back helping me and no one seems to suggest that I shouldn't just be using windows mapped drives so I'll continue down that route.
