Why do I loose so much transfer speed with my QNAP TS 264 ?

Post by Bjhirsch »

Hello

I would need help to understand where my SSD transfer speed drops as I have a good setup as I would like to think :

- a 2.5GB connection (working with the below screenshot of Internet speed showing 2375 MB /Sec down and 2221 MB/sec up:
nPerf.jpg
- a drive read speed of my QNAP drives with HDDs 246 MB/SEC and 850 MB/SEC on my SSD
qnap disk report.jpg
- Macbook & QNAP are on the same 2.5GB hub
- QNAP is running SMB protocol with both 2.5GB ports connected to the router

but when I am accessing my SSDs (2x in Raid 1) I get only 276 MB/Sec read and 259 MB/S write , only slightly better than the HDDs with 276 MB/Sec read and only 131MB/S write (with AJA speed test , screenshot attached:
qnap SSD .jpg
QNAP HDD.jpg
Any explanation why the SSD transfer speed is so much below drive speed measured in QNAP& connection speed to the NAS ? What are the settings to get better transfer speeds as I am working directly on a photo library on the NAS SSD drives ( QNAP settings, would it be faster to run the photo storage only on 1 SSD (with scheduled backups to the HDDs ) and use 1 SSD as cache , would it be better to organize the HDDs & SSDs together in a storage pool ?)

Many thanks for any help as this speed “difference “ is very disappointing vs the 2.5GB setup which was my main reason to select QNAP over the competition …

Internet speed does not matter (nothing is going via the internet ..I hope), but the test above says Mb/s not MB/s

You have a NAS with 2.5GGbE, so the speeds seem right and as always, forget about cache..certainly caching SSD with SSD
