New NAS for storage TS-1655 vs TVS-h1688X

Post by blade80 »

Hi All,

Building new NAS soon for video storage with ZFS and choosing between these two for now. Mostly interested in max capacity and reliability with no extra bells & whistles. I prefer a more bare bones NAS where there are fewer things to break over time.

Here is a planned build 12x24TB drives in RAID6 with 2x2TB 990 PRO m.2s with heatsink for sys vol and swap RAM for 32GB.

Here are my thoughts:
TS-1655 - cheaper and more reliable in the long run (I think), but for some reason 24TB WD gold is not listed as compatible although I think it should be. Any difference between EXOS and WD Gold? I heard EXOS might be nosier which I don't really like. Will CPU and 32gb ram in 1655 be sufficient for storing and accessing video files? Should I go for 64 gb? Will TS1655 be powerful enough for what I need? I can definitely get h1688x but do I need it for my use case scenario? I also think it might be less reliable as it has more bells and whistles. Just to clarify, this is just for storage of finished video - not editing as I have SSDs for that.

Can I have one large 240TB volume in ZFS with these mapped to a drive letter on PC? (assuming RAID 6). I think QTS has a limitation for that, but not ZFS?

Overall, I believe, units with more than 12 drives only come in rackmount versions which I don't want.

Any use case for 4 ssd slots on both of these units? Any other ideas?

Thank you)

The Atom powered NAS will be cheaper to buy and to run (power use) No need to beef up the RAM is all you need is storage (what speeds are needed?)

Even 2.5gbps is fine with me although my main desktop is 10gbit capable and my switch is currently qnap @ 2.5gbps so might drop 10gbit card in there as well and upgrade the switch, but that's the easiest thing to add.

Do you think 24TB WD Gold will be fine on ts-1655 even though it's not listed as compatible but 22TB version is?

Thanks!

so you are ok spending $529.99 per WD Gold Drive, when you could have purchased Seagate Ironwolf Pro 24 TB for $479 -
so you spent $6360 on drives, but you only wanted to spend $1849 for the TS-1655, and now you MUST add a 10G card (QXG-10G2T) for $269 (because you ain't doing 4K + editing with Premiere, Resolve
or FCP X with 2.5G ethernet) - so now your cost is $269 + $1849 = $2118, as opposed to just spending $3169 for the TVS-h1688X - so you just saved $1051, but you now have an ATOM CPU with only 8 gig of RAM instead of a Intel Xeon CPU with 32 Gig of RAM. And you better install two 500 Gig Samsung EVO 870's in either of these 2 models to run the QuTS operating system as Storage Pool 1.

So - did you really save money ? Had you purchased the Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives - it would have been the same price. Let me repeat - you ain't doing 4K editing with pro programs over 2.5G - so not only do you need the 10G card for the TS-1655, you are going to need a 10G switch if you have multiple computers - like a QNAP QSW-M408-4C or a QSW-M3216R-8S8T. See - you are going to spend that money, no matter what you do.

You will have one large volume - in RAID 6, with the 24 TB drives, that will be 240 TB on a Mac. On a PC (since a 24 TB is really just over 22 TB) - you will see about 220 TB of usable storage after RAID 6.

here is your RAM chip for the TS-1655 to give you 32 Gig of RAM

here is the QNAP compatiblity list for the TS-1655
https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/ts-1655
scroll to the bottom where it says "optional accessories> RAM".

Welcome to professional video editing.

Thank you very much all!

Settling on TS1655 still with 10gbit upgrade +32gig ram ZFS- considerably cheaper than h1688x in Canada - doesn't run as hot/noisy and I think will last longer than h1688x for storage purposes)
