Move away from Google Photos to a QNAP NAS Solution

Post by cranks »

I have used 91% of my Google storage and I now want to move away from Google.

What I would like (not sure if it is possible) is to:
a) move all photos and videos from my Google account to my NAS, thus stop using Google Photos.
b) have all new photos and videos taken after the above stored and accessible on my NAS.

I have tried:-
Qfile Pro: but I could not find any information if I could delete the Google Photos and have them safely retained and accessible on my NAS.
QuMagie: does back ups and again not sure if I can delete Google Photos
MARS: again does backups and again not sure if it is safe to delete Google Photos

My NAS is a TS-453Pro with QTS 5.2.0. and my phone is a Nothing 2a on android 15.

Any / all help appreciated

Make sure you do not expose the NAS to WAN (malware)

So you want a way to autosync your files when in your home wifi then..correct?

If the images are important to you, keep multiple backups on different backup media or devices.

Personally, I don't rely on any "tool" to automate the backup of the data on my phones. I simply copy the folders from my phones to appropriate share locations on my NAS keeping me in control of when, how and where it is done.

My main interest is to move away from using Google and as I mentioned, once photos have been backed up can I safely delete them from Google Photos without affecting the albums on my NAS. Then for any new photos/videos have them 'sync' to my NAS.
The solution needs to be reasonably robust and basic as I will also use the process for my wife's photos too.

I'm using it as you describe. Amazingly, Qumagie seems to be more fully-featured (despite niggles) than any other solution I can find. I use Qfile on my phone to upload photos automatically on the LAN. These can then be safely deleted from Google Photos. For data security, I run:

1. Mirrored RAID drives.
2. Weekly external backup.
3. Monthly cloud backup.

For extra points, I allow Google Photos to fill up over the course of the year. At the end of the year, I use Google Takeout to export them in an archive and then delete that year's photos from Google.

You can use CloudLink but NOT MyQNAPCloud to access Qumagie via the internet. The former allows you to access your NAS through QNAP's servers without opening any ports and should (no guarantees though!) be safe. The latter exposes your NAS to the internet and requires the dreaded UPnP to be enabled on your router (big fat no to that one, never do it).

Thanks mustard so much for this! It is reassuring once I have backed up Google Photos they can be deleted safely.
After more research I came across MARS to do backup of all my photos and have started now to delete Google photos with confidence.

I have a similar back up strategy to yours so I think all my pictures will be safe now.

Interestingly, I had more 'junk' in my Gmail sent folder, Spam folder and Bin that help free up more space. This is something I need to do more regularly to keep on top of free space.

Hi! I've just bought my first NAS (TS-462-4G) and installed MARS. I've managed to backup all my Google Photos without issues, but I now have a question:
I would like to establish a one way daily sync from Google to NAS but avoid deleting NAS backups if I delete anything on Google Photos. That way, I would be able to delete particularly large files from Google Photos to save some space and then back them up elsewhere. I don't want to delete everything because I use several Google features for sharing, etc.
How would you go about doing this? Please keep in mind that I am a complete newbie, with less than 48h of QNAP ownership under by belt!
