I currently have a Ready NAS 102 with 2 - 4 terabit drives in raid 1.
As Netgear has left the NAS market and no longer supports their NAS boxes I think it is time to move on.
I am looking at the QNAP TS-462-4G-US 4 Bay Multimedia Desktop NAS with Intel Celeron Dual-core Processor with M.2 PCIe Slots and PCIe expandability and 2.5GbE (2.5G/1G/100M) Network Connectivity (Diskless).
At this time, I use the Netgear for file sharing, back up of computers and phones, (Files only) Photos back up and sharing, and Plex
The plan is to also get a 3rd - 4 Terabit drive and install in the QNAP, set up the new NAS then copy over my files from the Netgear.
Then move the other 2 drives to the QNAP and set up a Raid 5. Then add a 4th drive later.
Does this sound like a reasonable plan or is this a horrible idea?
If you think I should do something else, let me know.
Thank you for any ideas.
Dale

Re: ReadyNas to QNAP
I would get backups in order first (all that copying around sounds like you have no backups)
Then you could do the transfer like you suggested with a fallback option in case your plan goes soutth (restripe operations are the most vulnerable)
Also be careful with sharing your NAS with the public, never ever ever do that via port forwards (malware)

Re: ReadyNas to QNAP
Thank you for the reply.
I am updating my backups and dumping old files no longer needed. Takes time.
I try not to expose my network any more than needed to the internet. My security is telling me the Ready Nas needs to go as it is showing a known bad IP poking around a port that it has been blocking. Don't need no ransomware getting in.

Re: ReadyNas to QNAP
No, never expose ANY port of your QNAP
If you already have bad actors on your IP currently .. you will have a bad time
