Use nas as switch

Post by tootalluk »

My friend has a TVS-h1688x it was originaly located under his stairs with his modem router and switch with a cable running to his garage to another switch the problem with this was the heat generated was causing high temperatures in the nas.
simple solution was to move the nas to his garage for lower temp's

he runs his company books and his home survailance on QVR pro

original undestairs set up was
Moden > router (netgear X10) > Netgear 28 port switch via 10G fiber > Qnap via 10G fiber also from the 28 switch to garage switch via CAT 6A 1G switch

current setup
Modem > router > 28 port > garage switch 1G > nas

the problem is connecting to the garage with on 1G is causing isues with the camera feeds as there in not enough bandwith for them

desired setup
Modem > router > 28 port > NAS via 10G cat 6A > garage switch.

so i know this can be done but my question is can this be done with the router being the DHCP server on the garage switch if so what setting would i need to setup in the Qnap.

Check on how to do a software defined switch ..but why would the DHCP server run on the garage switch?

If it is all 1 wired network, then only 1 DHCP server is required.

This however, would be more of a concern to me....

I hope he takes backups and security serious for the company sake.

he only has 1 Cat 6A cable run under his drive to the garage that will go to the qnap and then from the qnap to the switch that runs some cameras an AP and printer is there any setting i need to setup on th qnap to let the switch be seen by the router and designate the ip addresses

software defined switch will act as a switch, no setting needed
