Memory Upgrade on TS 251A

Post by freeman74 »

Hi All,

I would like to expand the memory on my new TS-251A with latest firmware version. I know that the maximum extension is 8GB for this model, but during my web investigation, i saw that is possible to try the 16GB ram extension by 2 Kingston so-dimm module (2*Kingston KVR16LS11/8). I also uderstood that's an attempt and not in all cases could be possible.

My first doubt is about the voltage for this module: the QNAP so-dimm module ha 1.35v but the Kingston KVR16LS11/8 has 1.5v.

Could be Dangerous in case i try to do this kind of expansion?

thank you

The KVR16LS11 are PC3L - low voltave - able to operate on 1.35V FMI: https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KVR16LS11_8.pdf

I have almost the same question. Does the TS-251 and TS-251A have the same ram module? Because i want to order 2x4GB Crucial memory (http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/ts-251/CT8941096) and it is compatible with TS-251.

I bought a TS-251A with 2Gb (2x1Gb Adata DDR3L 1600 1.35V ADDS1600X1G11-BSSQ). Today I opened my NAS and changed these dual Adata 1Gb RAM modules WITH 2x8Gb Kit(Total 16Gb) Crucial DDR3L 1600 = PC3 12800 1.35V CT2KIT102464BF160B http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct2kit102464bf160b and my NAS booted and worked perfectly, recognizing all 16Gb in qnap system. Ready for running VMs and containers now!

dcrivella - hi, I would like to give trying out 16GB as well - but as it is beyond spec, would you mind confirming if you have had any issues with it since you set it up? Thanks!

I have successfully upgraded a new TS-251A to 16GB with the Crucial CT2K8G3S160BM kit. It is the "Mac Compatible" branded retail package of the CT2KIT102464BF160B kit. Other than the packaging it is identical.

This was an upgrade on a new TS-251A before first power-on. It has been running fine for a couple of weeks now. The only problem I had was one of the inner screws on the internal drive cage really didn't want to come out, but I managed to swap the memory modules without having to remove the cage.

Thanks!

-- and as an update (as of December 16, 2016) I ordered a Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory CT2KIT102464BF160B kit, and it installed without a hitch.

I've now got 16GB of RAM working fine in my TS-251A.

Is there a definitive list of compatible memory? I want to upgrade to 8GB and there seems a lot of DDR3L 1600 (PC3-12800) SODIMM 204 Pin 1.35v modules that are not compatible (according the crucial website but the same goes for other manufactures). I understand heatspreaders are a no no.
For example I was looking at this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-PC3L-1 ... =UTF8&th=1

There are 3 8GB options (2 are 2x4gb kits) and only 1 of them is compatible on the crucial website.

Hi Guys,

can I use following RAM out of a 2015 iMac:
2x 4GB Micron Crucial DDR3L RAM 1866 Mhz PC3-14900 SO-DIMM
Manufacturer ID: MT8KTF51264HZ-1G9E2
with my new TS-251A-2G???

Got other RAM:
2x Kingston KVR16LS11/8 8GB (DDR3L Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM 1,35V, 204-pin 1,5V)

Works perfect with TS-251A!!!

Firmware 4.2.2 Build 20161214
2 Slots (8GB / 8GB) Total 16GB (15.56 GB used)

Thanks

Hi Ratko,

Did you have any luck with this. I have a recently purchased TS-251A but I realise that I need to upgrade the RAM to do what I want with virtualisation.

I have seen a youtube video showing how easy it is to upgrade the RAM but I am not sure of what RAM I should use.

Thanks for any and all help

Hi all from Spain

This is my first post here, don't be bad with my level of english plz!

My experience. I bought this Crucial memory for my model TS251A
CT2KIT102464BF160B

Crucial Brand
Item model number CT2KIT102464BF160B
Series 16GB Kit (8GBx2) PC3-12800
Form Factor 204-pin SO-DIMM
RAM Size 16 GB
Memory Technology 204-pin SO-DIMM, DDR3
Computer Memory Type DDR3 SDRAM
Voltage 1.35 volts

Crucial 16 GB Kit (8 GB x 2) DDR3L 1600 MT / s (PC3L-12800) SODIMM 204-Pin Memory.

Https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1

It does not work. The NAS turns on but resets all the time, no light goes on either. If I put the memory back, everything is going well. If I put a single module of 8 GB either. I tested the memory in a laptop and it goes great.

Wow :(

I opened a ticket with Qnap in this subject below is what I was told

Thanks for contacting QNAP,
This unit supports up to 8GB however you needed to purchase the QNAP memory, Since QNAP memories are only compatible memories with QNAP NAS .
you can find below link if you want to purchase it .

--apparently it is proprietary memory and I purchased memory from Crucial and Crucial states it will work on my QNap device.

I just tried installing 2x 8GB crucial modules (CT102464BF160B) in my TS-451A and it works fine until a reboot. After a reboot, the drives in slots 3 & 4 always go inactive. I have swapped drives around and reinitialized the NAS and it always does the same thing. However, when I shutdown (power off) the NAS and power it back on, everything shows up just fine. I am on the latest firmware 4.3.3.0210 build 20170606 with 4x 10TB WD Reds.

I also tried 2x 4GB modules and it also does the same thing.
