Win10 image - Boot failed: Could not read from CDROM

Postby jmassot » Tue May 08, 2018 3:49 pm

I am unable to get the Microsoft MSEdge_Win10 evaluation image running in VS3.
I have downloaded and installed the image directly from VS3, via the "Try a free Windows WM" button. The installation process goes well, with no errors. Then, when trying to Power ON the new VM, I am getting:

Booting from Hard Disk...
Booting from DVD/CD...
Boot failed: Could not read from CDROM (code 0004)
No bootable device.

See screen captures attached.

Not that I have no problem installing a Win7 image, the issue only appears with the Win10 image.

Any hints to get this solved?

Thanks!

Heyho...

Could it be possible that you need to have an EFI bios to boot up that VM ? If thats the case you could could get the tiano core efi bios at https://www.kraxel.org/repos/jenkins/edk2/
You will need OVMF_CODE-pure-efi.fd and OVMF_VARS-pure-efi.fd from that rpm. Place that in for example the same directory on the qnap your vm resides and modify the OS section of the corresponding
VM definition using /QVS/usr/bin/virsh (virsh edit <id of the container>), by adding something like:

<loader readonly='yes' type='pflash'><path to file>/OVMF_CODE-pure-efi.fd</loader>
<nvram><path to file>/OVMF_VARS-pure-efi.fd</nvram>

Replace the <path to file> with the actual path: eg /share/vm/win10

This unfortunately won't survive a restart of the virt station though - if anyone knows how to make such changes persistent let me know :)

Yours
Andreas.

Your VM doesn't have a valid boot source. Go to storage, and what Hard Drive image is currently being used?

I ended up in doing a normal win10 install boot iso file with the microsoft tool and loaded it into the he VM. From there it installed fine.
