extended attributes lost during copy using File Station

Postby rhap4boy » Mon Aug 13, 2018 2:28 am

When copying or moving files using File Station from one QNAP to another QNAP over SMB mount, extended attributes such as Mac's color tag highlight is lost.
Is there a way to make this work?

I don't see any option related to extended attributes in File Station Settings Options

No there is no way to make it work over SMB mount. By default Samba (the SMB server on QNAP) will behave as if the client is Windows. Windows doesn't have extended attributes.

When the client is a Mac, Samba uses a non-standard extension of the SMB protocol to handle macOS extended attributes.

So, to copy or move Mac files from one NAS to another:
- Either mount both NASes on a Mac, via AFP or SMB doesn't matter, as you prefer, and perform the file operations from that Mac.
- OR use specialized backup/sync software such as Hybrid Backup Sync that operates directly on the on-disk data without going thru SMB, and can preserve extended attributes.
