Is there a lot of difference between these two settings?

Post by vcvs2 » Thu Jul 30, 2020 9:20 pm

I have a TS-453ª and I am looking to upgrade discs and I am in doubt for speed or space.

1st. Configuration:
2 x WD Red 3TB NAS Internal Hard Drive - 5400 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb / s, CMR, 64 MB Cache
2 x WD Red 6TB NAS Internal Hard Drive - 5400 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb / s, SMR, 256MB Cache
In RAID 5

Or

2nd. Configuration:
1 x Corsair 60GB SATA 3 6Gb / s SSD
1 x WD Red 3TB NAS Internal Hard Drive - 5400 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb / s, CMR, 64 MB Cache
2 x WD Red 6TB NAS Internal Hard Drive - 5400 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb / s, SMR, 256MB Cache
In RAID 5 and using Qtier

Will there be a very high speed gain between these two configuration examples?

Thanks for your help

why would you even think of using smr in a raid situation?

Hi @doubyman, thanks for your reply. I'm starting to get to know NAS storage technology and I don't know the difference between CMR and SMR, but I could choose another HD model with CRM if it's the best choice.
