Can HBS 3 write a backup to an external USB drive?

Post by wus-Q »

Until now I was unable to create a backup of the data on my TS-251+ on an external USB drive connected to the front USB port. Where is this "hidden"?

The NAS - a TS-251+ running 4.4.3.1439 and HBS 3 version 13.0.0930 - sees and shows the external USB drive, and I can select it as a source of data to be backed up, but I can't find where I can select it as destination for the backup.

Can someone here give me the decisive hint, please?

you plug in external usb hard drive e.g. western digital elements

into the QNAP NAS.

i don't use external usb. but for my TL-D400S, i use the HBS one way sync RTRR local. I am able to select my TL-D400S from there. So i assume external USB would be similar? you can check :'

i am assuming you are using the default admin account yes? if not, i heard there may be issues with external usb working properly in qts :'

You need to assign read/write right of your login account under Control Panel >Share Folders to your USB external drive.

thats what i thought as well. but another user said he did all that but it didn't work. so it was speculated that perhaps not using the default admin account was the reason it didn't work.

or maybe could be that fella didn't set the permissions correctly as he should have, who knows :'

@Moogle: those videos are outdated. I used to do backups to that USB drive using the old Backup Station app, but this has long been superseded by HBS 3.

@JDH: I checked rights under under Control Panel >Share Folders, but I already had read/write rights there, as admin and as regular user.

Any other suggestion, anyone?

Have you ever tried to login as admin please? I did this days ago and it worked in my environment.

I'm logging in as admin all the time, never used the user account recently.

Few more points to clarify:
1) Can you see the drive details inside the ‘Storage & Snapshots > External Storage’?
2) What is the format of your external drive?
3) You meant you cannot see the drive when using HSB Sync pairing?
4) Can you see the drive in File Station?

@JDH:
1) yes I can
2) EXT4
3) I did not try Sync (and what is sync pairing?). From HBS 3 main menu I click Backup & Restore --> Backup Now --> New Backup Job. Then I select the source folders from my NAS that I want to back on the USB drive and clicked next. On the Select the destination storage space page that opens then, I can only choose from Local NAS, Remote NAS and a range of Cloud services. No USB drive, external storage whatsoever.
4) Yes

@Moogle: I don't understand. What do you mean?

In 3), you choose local NAS and you will see your external drive like in File Station.

Edit:It’s embedded inside the local NAS.

I, too, thought it should be on the local NAS, and chose that. But no external drive there.

You try the one-way sync and see if you can pair the drive? Choose local NAS when you are asked.

I'm sorry for all the confusion - I think I now found what I was looking for under Services. Strange place IMHO, but then I'm German and I may not always know all the meanings of English words that I basically (think to) know.

The "Service" that I mean is USB One Touch Copy. It looks much like what I remember from Backup Station. I will try this now. If it doesn't work I will come back here.

If it works the way I remember from Backup Station it will take considerable time until the folders on the USB HDD are updated with the corresponding folders on the NAS, so don't expect a quick update here.

Oh, and thank you for all your support!

It seems the One Touch Copy finished, although I'm not at all sure. The background task notification which was shown yesterday while the task was running, which also showed a progress bar, is gone. However, judging from the speed and progress that it had reached until midnight (before I went to bed), I estimated it should take until around today evening or even longer before it completes.

So maybe the process was killed - and didn't resume this morning - because I forgot to disable my power schedule, which shuts down the NAS between 02:00 and 07:00. "Postpone scheduled sleep/restart/shutdown when a replication job is in progress" is checked in my power schedule, but I don't know if USB One Touch Copy counts a "replication job".

Do you know if it does?
