QNAP to Discontinue Support for Photo Station, Qphoto, and Qvideo

Post by dolbyman »

From a QNAP Press release:

Taipei, Taiwan, June 26, 2023 - QNAP® Systems, Inc. today announced that from October 1, 2023 the photo management app Photo Station and mobile apps Qphoto and Qvideo will no longer receive software updates and technical support for Photo Station, Qphoto, and Qvideo.

The discontinuation of these apps will allow for additional resources to be committed to researching and developing next-generation multimedia solutions. QNAP would like to thank its users for their long-term support, and apologizes for any inconvenience that discontinuing these apps may cause.

Notes

Photo Station, Qphoto and Qvideo can still be used if you download them before October 1, 2023. However, they will no longer receive updates and will not be eligible for technical support.

Recommended alternative apps
• Photo Station users can switch to using QuMagie for photo/video storage and management. QuMagie integrates AI Core image recognition for AI-powered photo/video classification, powerful file search, and a more intuitive UI.
• Qphoto and Qvideo users can switch to using QuMagie Mobile for remotely browsing photos and videos stored in their NAS.

Albums created by Photo Station and Qphoto on the same device will be automatically transferred to QuMagie and QuMagie Mobile, and the album functions are unaffected.

Excellent, a primary group of security vulnerabilities removed from QNAP NAS. This was long-overdue. :D

Qphoto and Qvideo still up on the mobile app page.
Doesn't make sense. Oh well.

Removal won’t happen until the 1st of October, as mentioned in the OP. ;)

If they discontinue Photo station it sounds logical that they also scrap the corresponding mobile app.
But, since they're also scrapping the mobile app qvideo, wouldn't it be logical that they also discontinue the video station app on the nas?
Or could there be other reasons why they are keeping that app?

It's possible to install QuMagie manually (qpkg package) without QNAP AI Core. Latest version: https://download.qnap.com/QPKG/qumagie- ... 229341.zip
Three not ending tasks are displayed:

but other than that everything seems to be working.

Please keep Qmagie tips and tricks limited to other threads, this one should be just for discussion about the discontinuation of above apps.

Thanks

I have for a while switched from photo station to photo prism. i use docker to host photo prism
https://www.photoprism.app/

it also has a feature similar to qumagie but i haven't yet set that up.

video station was never a fan. a lot of us already knew to use either plex, emby, jellyfin or kodi.

music no idea. i normally just use foobar to stream from nas and that always sufficed for me.

so some of these station apps, it never really mattered how good they were because there were already nicer alternatives to use.

Photostation was ok for me, but i always felt the qumagie app was never completed to satisfaction for my needs.

and like others pointed out, the station apps tended to have security issues that required frequent patches. to the point i felt you are better of not exposing these services online in the first place. for example i had photo station running for many years but didn't face security issues because i never exposed this service online but still able to use it on local lan just fine.

With Qphoto and Qvideo I could stream with chromecast to my television.
QMagie has no streaming option so for my this is no go.
Could QMagie get a streaming option before QPhoto and QVideo are discontinued?

Up to now all our experience with Qumagie is pretty negative: Basically our [family, spread over various addresses] group makes use of a single NAS at one address to store and manage image material. Therfore we make use of the mobile apps. For a start Qumagie can't cast at all so for the video [streaming] wishes we are being forced to use Plex in stead of Qvideo, which is not a bad thing but it's still a bit ridiculous that we have to resort to 3rd party software. Qumagie for photos is a step backwards on Qphoto [which can cast by the way], in fact we find it irritating as the thumbnail size has now become a random mix of just a bit too small and 4 times that size, maybe this is done by others [google?] and someone found it cool so they copied it but it's just a step backwards. The listing is only available in months, so not days or weeks or years which other apps do make available [often faces, places, countries and more]. When a single photo is selected, there is no longer the strip of thumbnails available so one can see at a glance what the neigbours are. We have yet to find out where the location data is to be found, again selecting a single photo does not reveal this [all the loc data is in the files] third party apps [Photo Map] do find and present loc. data. This means that searching by location [places or countries?] does not work. Up to now all facial tagging, so lists of names are constantly dissappearing so facial [and searching by] tagging is basically not available. If when using the app [we all have android] one switches to messaging for for instance Qumagie, on switching back, reconnects and rescans the NAS again which all just slows everthing down. Qumagie does not inlude the option to view folders [Qphoto can] which would have been handy to differenciate between owners and or subjects, using Qumagie for this is very time consuming without being able to use face tagging or location data. As said, UP TO NOW Qumagie is a big dissapoitment and a step down from Qvideo and Qphoto. For now we are using Photo Map for photo viewing and Plex for video streaming.

Qphoto or any other native app used directly via exposure is pure data suicide..malware

Never EVER EVER expose your NAS to WAN
