[b]Support of Java , JSP(JavaServerPage), SERVLET, TOMCAT[b]

Post by progsystem » Mon May 12, 2008 8:40 pm

A lot of people form many forum are looking for NAS that provide JSP,servlet page for there small home page. Apache TOMCAT is commonly use for creating java web pages(JSP, SERVLET) so i think it will be a good feature

I know that the synology team is working on it, so as a qnap fan and a java developper i think that it will be a very good idea to provide such technology in Qnap NAS

I fully agree. Having some Java application server (Servlet container) is basically the only thing still missing on my QNAP NAS.

However I am wondering if the hardware would be able to run one :?

I agree a Java webserver would be great, but I doubt the box would handle it.

Alternatives? Maybe try some PHP, or rent a cheap Java shared server and put up a simple http redirect html page on your nas box. Such as dailyrazor.com

edit: JavaScript and CSS is a great way to put the load onto the client. A simple html form-based website can use javascript to do all validation and display. You could even use Ajax.

I'm running Tomcat 6.0.18 on my TS-209 running Debian. I use the Cacao JVM with a JIT compiler which is much faster than the interpreting JVM that comes with Debian normally.

I ran some *very* simple performance tests with JMeter testing a Hello world-like web application yesterday and it was able to handle 150-200 requests/minute.

So, it *is* possible, but it wont be able to handle a large community, or hardly a small one. But perhaps a tiny one. :)

Let me know if you have a specific web app in mind and I might be able to run some tests on it.

As I wrote, I have only installed it on a Debian QNAP, not on the factory firmware. I guess it might be possible on the factory firmware as well, but I haven't tried it.

If you can find a java machine in the ipkg, you should start with that. Preferably one with a JIT compiler built-in, if you succeed with that, Tomcat should be easy to install.
