(HP) PCL XL Error

Post by jaz000 »

I have an HP LaserJet 2200d which is on the supported list

the printer is detected ok
setup OK on PC

but when printing the paper comes out with this printed on it:

PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: Unsupported Protocol
Operator: 0x0
Position: 0

This is fairly standard HP printer speak for I didn't like what you gave me

But it worked fine with the same driver when connected from another window pc as print server

I've got no idea how to debug from the unix side

what could be going wrong?

Check out: USB Printer and also please review this article.

You didn't think to provide your PC's operating system, so please consult one of the following (as appropriate):
  1. Windows 7, Vista Users
  2. Windows XP Users
  3. Mac OS 10.6
  4. Mac OS 10.5
  5. Mac OS 10.4
  6. Linux (Ubuntu 10.10)
Did you install HP's "PCL" drivers on your unidentifed PC Operating System?

I realize that you are using QTS v4.0, but QNAP has not released the QTSv4.0 User Manual yet, so you'll have to rely on this information from the v3.8.x version of the manual. (I sincerely doubt that QNAP has done anything to upgrade their broken implementation of CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) since Firmware v1.0, so these sections of the v3.8.x manual should still apply to your QTSv4.0 Firmware).

You also might find QNAP Tutorial: How to set up a network printer via QNAP NAS? worth reading.

Congratulations on your new TS-421 NAS. I hope it meets all your NAS requirements. BTW, Your NAS does NOT use an AMD processor at all. I believe it uses the same Marvell® 6282 2.0GHz ARMv5 32-bit single-core processor as the TS-419P II, but has twice as much RAM.

yeah AMD / ARM - not sure why I get those mixed up

problem happens with windows 7 and windows 8

Yes it's that horrible HP universal plc driver (plc6) rather than a printer specific one (latest from hp is only the universal one for this printer)
I tried re-installing the drivers _several times_ despite these three pcs having been printing happily with their existing drivers for years+

In the end I got them working by installing the postscript version of the driver which HP do still supply as current, and bingo they all work!

I have no idea what it's doing to PCL, but somehow it seems to be breaking it ?
